My boyfriend has three geintal warts on his penis. They were just discovered. An obviuos sign of HPV. Once his warts are gone will it be safe for us to have sex without a condom since I have been exposed to HPV by being with him? Or will we just keep passing the HPV virus back and forth between each other? The doc won't give me a pap test since I just had one in Dec 2006 and said I have to wait until Dec 2007 for another one.

Only about 1% of people who carry a wart-causing strain of HPV will ever get warts. Seems your boyfriend is in the 1%. However, *IF* you get his HPV, you could very well wind up in the other 99%. You could already have his HPV and simply not know it.

Generally, I *never* endorse sex without a condom unless you are trying to make a baby. While condoms aren't perfect in preventing HPV's spread, they are a lot better than nothing.

At this point, you need to decide for yourself whether you are willing to assume the risk of exposure. you *KNOW* your bf has HPV. You could either assume you have it, too, and then make a concious choice not to use condoms (not exactly what I'd recommend per se). Or you could still try to prevent infection by using condoms consistently.

On the bright side, wart-HPV doesn't generally lead to cancer. On the other hand, they're warts, and they're unpleasant to deal with (although they're not the horrible pox people seem to make them out to be).

At this point, it's entirely up to you. You know the risk is there. You should also know they it's not a lethal hazard, but it's a pretty big inconvenience for many. Choice is yours.

ADDENDUM FOR DANA: HPV can be transmitted even when there are no warts present. So the possibility of transmissions should always be a consideration at all times. That's why it's important to continue to use condoms even after wart removal to minimize the risk as much as possible.

you were already exposed to the hpv virus. it may show up in you or it may not. but if it didnt yet, why take a chance. he needs to go to the doctor and get something to treat the warts. until then, you must use a condom when you have sex. once they are all gone you can leave the condom alone. but until then to be safe, use one. but he needs to get some medicine for the warts.
