what can you do to get a man to open up?

Stop working on getting him to open up. Half the time you find out things you never wanted to know. Stop trying just chill he will open on his own when he gets around to it.

just say something simple like " I read in a magazine about this woman who traveled the world in her 70's! Isn't that great! I hope to do that some day too, although i think i would rather do it before i hit 30. What about you, what do you want to accomplish before you hit 30?"

That way you're opening up first, and its not as though hes on the spot, but timing is everything, make sure you don't ask when the tv is on, his friends are around, or hes in a bad mood. Ask him when you're out to dinner or before you go to bed. Listen ... and keep listening very carefully because "Opening Up" when it is "Men sharing their hearts" sounds very different than when women are sharing our hearts!
For one thing, the guys tend to use a lot less words.

Watch two guys together some time. It may appear nothing is going on, yet they are probably communicating at a deep level just doing an activity together, all the while saying very little or next-to-nothing.

Once on an episode of the TV show House, Dr. Wilson had just separated from his wife, and his character mentions this fact to his friend Dr. House.
(At this point, I turned to my husband and said, "oh, NOW they are going to share their hearts, aren't they?!!")
In reality, all that was said was approximately two words by Dr. House: "Wanna beer?"

And that, according to my husband is "Men Sharing their Hearts and Opening Up"

Don't ask him to open up. Tune up your ears. Men that seem that they are closed up are actually showing you vulnerable areas, but as women we tend to look only in areas that we feel he should open up in. Introverts like your presence and have to establish a trusting atmosphere, and most introvert men are GREAT thinkers, so they are always thinking - when they feel a thought worthy of speaking of they will talk about it.
