The irs sent us an extra refund check. I don't know what to do. The phones are so busy right now to try to talk to someone.

Do you mean you got duplicates with the same amount, or two checks, one for what you expected, then a second one for an additional amount?

If you are supposed to have both, then the IRS will send you a letter in the next couple weeks telling you why you got the additional one. If you don't get a letter like that, set the second one aside, do NOT cash it, and keep trying to call them.

Don't cash it, hold on to it until you can talk to someone there. You may have to wait until after April 17th to get through. Find out if it is a duplicate refund check. There are times when you may be entitled to more refund than you figured, so you get the refund you put on your tax form, then the IRS determines that you are due more. In any case, make a note of the person's name that you talk to (they will tell you their name and ID when you finally get through), the date, and what they tell you to do with the check. If you are instructed to send it back, send it certified mail so you have proof.

Keep trying to call. Whatever you do, don't cash it. They will want the money back, so don't spend a penny of it.
