If you were to create a new kind of specie, what characteristics would it have?

I'd make an animal a lot like a rhesus monkey, but more intelligent, and better able to bond with people, and more "obedient and biddable." My reasoning here is that I'd like a better animal for assisting the handicapped than what we have now.
