With these anti smoking laws affecting many bars in many cities, why wouldn't the cities allow a certain number of bars to be smoking bars. This way, the sterile and whiny non-smokers can be happy and the smokers can be happy.

Oh and these designated smoking bars would have to list it on employer applications that they are a designated smoking establishment.

What is wrong with this idea? Does it make too much sense for our dumbazz government leaders?

I must agree that your concept would greatly help my community of Colorado Springs. We currently have bars openly defying the laws, and people are getting mad. If the person owns (isn't leasing/renting) the bar space, it should be up to them what they want to do. I believe that although it has been shown that smoking does not do anything good for your health, if there are establishments that want to allow smoking then they should be allowed. As a non-smoker, i would know where not to go, and i would need to accept the smoking if I chose to go inside. However, there should be a mandate that states that only a certain percentage of bars in an area can be smoking, so as to promote the health of not smoking. It's certainly a double edged sword and neither side will be completely happy unless they have it all.

Sounds like a nice idea for places which smoking is illegal. However, starting an establishment like this (and being a one-of-a-kind) would be hard. They would not only have to go through the government just to get the thing off the ground, but then find an area suitable for the smokers, advertise well enough to attract the smokers, then offer some sort of entertainment which is suitable for everyone.

Not only this, they would have to encourage sociable smoking as opposed to smoking at home or at a friends apartment.

I'm sure that it is possible, however overcoming these avenues would be tough.

Sounds like a great plan. But people probably don't want to go to bars that does not allow smoking - leading them to lose business. In your group of friends, lets say 2 out of 10 of them are smokers. Those 2 people will NOT go because you simply cannot drink without smoking. They will vote for a bar that does allow smoking, taking the other 8 with them.

Rosencrantz: FIRE FIRE FIRE Guildenstern: What are you doing Rosencrantz: Demonstrating the missuse of loose speech... To reply your query, I do not consider that people who smoke must be outcasted, however I do not consider that they're. There are occasions and locations wherein smoking is correct and occasions and locations wherein it's not. However, people who smoke are allowed to move at any place anybody else can at the same time they aren't smoking. There are many many public locations wherein I am now not allowed to take my puppies adding outside locations like neighborhood soccer fields and the encompassing parks. Similarly there are lots of locations that a smoker are not able to take a lit cigarette. The predominant rationale for that is that it could be disrespectful to the opposite persons in the ones places. Most non-people who smoke do not benefit from the odor of smoke. In our paranoid society nobody wishes to be inside severl miles of the closest carcenogen. It is solely the best way matters are. Increasing the quantity of freedom for one man or woman calls for the infringement on any person elses, so we cater to the bulk.

Gary, it would be really easy. Probably the easiest thing I would do all week would be to establish a smoking bar program. The program would be easy but the government beauracracy would not.

I think thats a good idea. I dont smoke but I think that would only be fair. Then the whiny smokers would be satisfied and stop griping. Non smokers arent whiny...we just dont like to inhale cancerous smoke.

I know that in the metro Atlanta area there are bars that only allow people 18 years of age or older to enter. These bars allow smoking inside.

Clever solution, but I'm afraid you'd never get it to work. Too many weirdos out there who would say that it would be a detriment to SOMEONE. I'm a complete non-smoker, and I even like the idea.
