What would be your first reaction.

My first reaction would be shock. That's a pretty rude and blunt comment. Then I would probably say "Well, some people shouldn't be parents. I guess it's good that you're figuring that out before bringing one into the world. It takes patience to deal with children's behavior sometimes. Some people just aren't the patient and nurturing kind." But, of course, I never think of what to say in the moment... it's always after the moment has passed that I think "Oh! I should have said this!" :o) haha.

The first thing you do is not to take it to heart. Some people are not meant to have children and this may be one of them children. Having children takes a lot of patience and understanding, and without them it's hard to be a good parent. Even the best of children have their moments and sometimes someone without children doesn't understand that. As long as your doing everything you can to help the children then leave the rest in God's hands and it'll come out alright. Good Luck

Speaking from the "other" side. I have met plenty of children that have made me question if I would like to have kids due to their behaviour and or attitude. It was more of a question of faith in myself though then a reflection on them. However - having said that, by stating what they did, their behaviour is worse then a child's. Although they may have been thinking it for whatever reason, they lacked total tact and maturity by making such a comment. But as to not sink to their level, I would have probably said something along the lines of "ya they can be a handful at times." Or laugh it off.

I would feel sorry for them, since they have obviously made a snap judgement about children and parenting based on one meeting on one day out of our lives...
and haven't made an informed decision.

Obviously, if my children were consistent trouble makers, I'd understand, but I hope that I am a good enough mother to not let this happen.

Could be a youthful reaction to the energy some little ones display or perhaps you have horrible kids... No I'm just kidding.

Read "Raising the Spirited Child" and get some skills to handle your children better perhaps.

Or simply blow it off and realize they don't know what they are talking about.

My first reaction would be stunned disbelief.
Disbelief that ANYONE could be that insensitive.
Then (I hope) I'd be quick enough with a devastating retort.
Every female knows the golden rule; you never make nasty comments about children to their Mother.
Is this person a fool or just foolish?

I am sorry you feel that way. Sad really, to think someone could be that selfish and rude. Having a child at the right time (well there is never a right time) or the right person is a life changing event indeed. No need to convince that person why they should have kids, but I would wonder why? What possible reason could they have?

Think about why they said that. If my kids are acting that wild in public, its time to correct a few things. My kids are angels in public cause they know we'll tear their butt up if they act like brats. If my kids act up, they know good and well that it will be awhile before they are allowed to go into that place again. Letting children run wild is doing your children a disservice.

My first reaction would be "my kids are children of the corn"

Well, I would be upset but wouldn't show, just come back with a sarcastic remark as "well just because you don't want any, won't be you wont have any! and they might be worse!" and laught! Usually that is what happends to people that don't have any kids nor an idea of what kids are all about!
