I see so many people getting them, and it doesnt really make any sense. I mean, alot of the people getting them just walk into parlors, pick a design on the spot, and "think" they will like it forever. And why not something on the mid or upper back? Seems like most lower back tattoos are sexual in nature because of the inverted pyramid many of them form.

I appreciate body art, but not if its drawn in a sexual way, and not if its a fad that wasnt thought out before it was done.

When I ask someone why they did something as permanent as a tattoo and they dont have any reason and just say "idk, I wanted to I guess" it simply baffels me.

Could someone please explain their popularity, why so many tattoos are not thought out and dont symbolize anything, and why so many of them seem to be mildly sexual in nature? (i.e. the upside down triangle so many of the lower back tattoos resemble?)

Oh. and why is it that it is essentially only women who get this kind?

i don't think that lower back tattoos are any more popular on girls than bicep tattoos are for guys. and it seems like most bicep tattoos are meant to show off a guys muscles and make him look like a meathead. i guess if a bicep tattoo is one in an artful way it is okay but all of those ones that are meant to accentuate the muscles are just dumb. i mean, why do they get them? (see how that can be turned around?)

if i were you i just wouldn't worry about what other people do with their bodies unless it directly affects you. and in the case of lower back tattoos i don't see how it really does. what does it matter if the tattoos are of a sexual nature or whatever? nobody is forcing you to get anything you don't want to get.

how about reserving your judgements for other things? everybody does the things they do for a reason and it's really not any of your business why they do it unless they chose to tell you but since you are so narrow minded i don't see why they would be inclined to try to hold an intelligent conversation with you.
just this tattooed girl's opinion.

Well bud if you want to look at it from a body point of view...we gals are the ones that physically get pregnant and have the kiddies right? Area doesn't stretch or get disfigured. It's discreet, can be shown or hidden, and not all designs are the traditional "lower back tribal" designs that you're thinking about. My tattoo is on my lower back but it's on the side of my back. It's a side portrait of my daughter and her Chinese name (real Chinese name) is getting added on Friday. It was my little personal tribute to my daughter and the tattoo is in the same location that her head was when I was pregnant. I agree with you on the fact that many tattoos are not thought out and that potentially leads to regret later on BUT there are those individuals that actually think out their tattoos too. I wouldn't group together or stereotype individuals if you don't know the full story on all tattoos. Not everyone gets them so you can have something to stare at during the fun deed.

I personally want one there eventually, because I think they're pretty. I just haven't finalized a design yet.
Another reason is that I like them in places that are really easy to hide if I need to for work. And that is an easy spot to cover up or show off.
As a girl, I think about how an upper back tattoo would look with something like a strapless wedding dress. Not saying that it would look bad, but it makes me think twice.
Fads come and go in everything.... tattoos included.

I think they get it on their lower back because a lot of women are wearing low-rise jeans that show off that part of the body. Also they may think that it is kind of like a little peek-a-boo game, because their shirt ends and their pants start so you may get a peek at the tattoo that they are sporting. Some people get tattoos just to say that they have one or when they are getting the tattoo the reason seems important to them but afterwords it is not that important or they forget the reason.

First off,I just have to say none of the tattoo's that I have chosen for myself have been spontaneous. I do have a tribal tattoo on my lower back, and for me it symbolizes the friendship that I have with a group of girls that I became very to close in Iraq. And, yes, in some way it does make me feel sexy. I don't show it off that much. But I love to look at it. As far as my other tattoos one is my husband name for the day we got marry and the other is a blue rose for the day my granmother died. Why are they so popular because where else would you put a tribal tattoo? On your neck "NO" don't think so. On the middle of your back who's going to see that, and as far as the upper part of your back doesn't look right. Only on the shoulder. Hope that helps.

the lower back is popular probably cause it can be hidden if wanted or shown off.i dont have one there and dont see myself getting one any time soon.i can tell you however that i have a tattoo that really has no purpose behind it.i like the design so i got it.all the rest do have meanings but not this one.i dont know why i got it i just wanted to.as for the sexual tattoos,i dont know what you mean.none of mine are sexual in nature.i mean i have seen ones that were sexual but to each his own.

like one of the answers said...b/c of the way jeans fit today and the amount of skin that is shown.

i see the lower back tattoo on women as the equivelent as a man getting a barbed wire tat or whatever on his arm: very popular and in some cases looks nice. but in others...they dont have the proper body to be sporting and showing off that kind of skin.to each his/her own though.

Well I supose if you think about the mind set of these people, there's your answer. You also mentioned what a spur of the monent decision it seems to be. Just go in, pick out a design and do it.
These are youngish girls who are not thinking about 10++ years down the line what this tattoo is going to look like. Joke is on them really. Immature decision for a tattoo. Not the best place for one either.
I also never understood why people get tattoos where they can not see them!

obviously not that many people put as much thought into all this as you..its just body art...what exactly do you want explained to you? Regardless if the tat has "special" meaning..some tats just look cool...and as forever..even if someone doesnt like thier tat later on which is hard to imagine..so what? If I was you I would worry more about myself than trying to figure out why people get tats on thier lower back..

simple answer is " cause its there"

and as far as sexual...maybe they are a very sexual person? maybe your not? or maybe you are but a tat isnt for you?
