Is it really worth the drive. Or is there a BBQ place in town just as good or even better?

It is not worth the drive or price. Look for some whole in the wall or try Rudy's.

For some reason (that I have failed to understand), most people here like the Salt Lick. I personally think the food is bland and would never be worth the trip even if it were across the street from my house. I prefer Ruby's BBQ. I think it is the best BBQ I have EVER had! (and I am from Houston). You do not see the Salt Lick featured on food TV stations as much as Ruby's, so somebody out there knows that the BBQ there is not as good as the latter. Nevertheless, the quality of food is highly subjective. No one can tell you if you will like it or not; only you can judge that for yourself.

It is totally worth the drive... even though the Salt Lick has an in town location - it's better to drive, drive, drive, get really hungry, pull up there with all of the crazy smells... and wait outside, drink a few shiners (but it's BYOB, so keep that in mind) and then chow like you've never chowed before..

Or, you can save that for later and test just how good their bbq is - it's the same stuff, imported in the morning and the afternoon from the country to their little restaurant on 360... but for some reason, it's just not the same without the atmosphere - a quick fix - but not the same.

Their cole-slaw is to die for - no mayo just sesame... the thought of the salt lick makes me want to be gluttonous.

I'm a former farm girl and when you said salt lick--well, I thought you meant what
we put in the field for the critters. : }
