McAfee and Norton Internet Security are the worse software you could ever get as they use loads of RAM and CPU even if you have a dual core and 2 GB of RAM it will slow it down.
Also I know for a fact that Norton make viruses as my dad got anti virus from systamntec a few years ago and it installed the viruses.
Also Norton leaves viruses behind when you unistall.
Try a free secuirty program:
AOL Active Virus Shield (made by Kaspersky not AOL they just own it)
Ad-Aware SE Personal

The first time I can think of is that your computer isn't fast enough to run your operating system and your McAfee Internet Security at the same time.

When you run McAfee, check your RAM to see how much avaiable RAM you have left. If your avaiable RAM is less than 30% while running McAfee, it means that you don't have enough RAM to run your operating system and McAfee at the same time.

It could also be your processor not being fast enough. Sometimes, even though your manufacturer lists that your processor speed is enough to run your Internet security, different kinds of models of processor have different powers. For example, an AMD Sempron at 2.6 GHz and an AMD Athlon 2.6 GHz, both are listed at running the same speed, but the Athlon one will run much better simply because it's a better model.

McAfee and Norton are the worst "Security Suites" ever. Not only do they take a crap load of CPU processing power, RAM, and startup slots similar to AOL back in the ol' days, but its constant annoyance of non-existent incoming viruses and what not are just a nuisance.

Get rid of the apps ASAP.

That's because that McAfee (and Norton) are resource hogs and slow down computers. Unfortunately there's nothing you can do if you want to keep McAfee, unless you change to the good and free security programs.

McAfee Internet Security Suite 2007 is rubbish. It uses to much computer resources making your computer to become slow.

I advice you to uninstall it and return it if you are able to and get a free anit-virus.

the best free one is Active Virus Shield by Kaspersky (AOL version) http://www.activevirusshield.com/antivirus/freeav/index.adp it can get rid of both virus and spyware

It might be a good idea to look at this list: http://www.virus.gr/english/fullxml/default.asp?id=82&mnu=82 it lists the best anit-virus programs

for a firewall use the inbuilt windows one or if you want comodo which is a free pro firewall http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/faqs.html?currency=GBP®ion=United%20Kingdom&country=GB

This is not unusual, especially if you have a low amount of RAM. Norton Suite takes a lot of system resources, causing your computer to slow down.

Anti Virus programs use a lot of your RAMM. Try upgrading it and you should be fine. Or simply try a better virus software suite.
