Walking is a milestone that all babies reach at different ages. Somewhere between 9-18 months most babies develop some mastery of walking unassisted. While 12 months is considered "average", your son is likely just not quite ready to walk yet, which is perfectly normal. There is no need to do anything special to encourage him. You can give him a "Good job" or a "Look at you!" when you notice him trying to pull himself up on furniture, but other than that, he'll get it on his own. As far as talking, simply talking to him and reading to him will be all you need to do. You will notice soon that he can understand what you say before he can say anything consistently himself. Like walking, talking is a milestone that has a wide range for mastery. Somewhere between 1-3 years old, most children will be able to communicate their needs adequately and be understood by the majority of the people who hear them.

You cannot teach a baby to walk, it is something that they will learn on their own. And it is done at their own speed. That's why you hear about some that are walking by 9 months old, and some that take longer. My son did not learn to crawl until after he learned to walk. he "crab-walked" everywhere until he was walking and would fall down. Just leave him on the floor as much as possible, and I think that doctors would tell you without shoes on, since that gives them the feel of what they are doing.

As far as the talking, you should have already been talking to him. Repeat words, not sentences. Simple words i.e. more, up, drink, no, stop, etc etc...and don't talk that gooey "baby talk"...they repeat what they hear...so remember that what you say is what is eventually going to come out.

Good Luck and quit worrying. Unless your doctor has told you that you need to worry, your son is just fine.

my boys are 12 months also, not yet walking. They can stand. To help them take steps I like to get them balanced up against the couch or a wall, once they are balanced I move back and and put my arms out to them to come to me. One of them can't get more than one step in, the other one is doing better and he started with one or two steps, now he can get in up to 6 steps. They also use the walking push toys a lot to help them out.
As far as talking, I repeated certain words to them over and over and over everyday until they get it.....right now we're working on papa and brother. One of them kind of says papa but he's still working on it.
Remember ALL children are different and they all grow at their own pace. Some children start walking at 10 months and others not til 18 months...it all depends on the baby and just because they may not be developing at the rate of other children doesn't mean there is anything wrong with them.

I had every single walking toy known to man in my living room and den. Then I thought Aha! The Pampers box! I sealed that sucker shut with packing tape. I stood him up, put his hands on the box, got behind him and pushed the box. I walked behind him pushing it and within a few minutes he was pushing it himself! He walked a few weeks after that. Now he RUNS everywhere. He'll talk when he's ready so relax on that. Include him in everything, talk to him like he's an adult, tell him everything you're doing as you do it, and read several books to him every single night before bed. Good luck!

I wouldn't worry about it. But there is a product you may be interested in. My brother bought it for his grandson and he started walking at 9 1/2 months. It is called Walking Wings.

Generally babies will be attempting to stand until they can walk between 10 to 12 months of age, but there are a good number who are delayed in this aspect. Talking is another matter, and the age varies more widely in this regard.

However, you should not neglect taking your child to the doctor to be checked up, perchance there is a developmental anomaly that needs to be checked out.

my daughter started walking at 14 months...dont fret.

P.S. for the poster above. i am going to guess you are not a parent considering there is a big difference between a 12 month old, 16 month old, and 18 month old....yet they would all be considered 1 year old!
