Knowing a friend who is heavily involved in the area of "computer forensics" and investigations of on-line predators....I forwarded your question through him.

His response was that in the law enforcement end there are strict federal guidelines that establish who can participate and how.

It was further related that civilian volunteers were a proposed option to assist in such investigations, however, there were several conflicts of interest involved that prevented the use of civilian volunteers.

I, for one, certainly appreciate your interest in becoming involved to a point where you want to assist in getting these sex offenders and can suggest, as others, contact your local law enforcement agency to see if there are other means of which you can show your support.

Best wishes!

Most local law enforcement agencies have task forces to do this, in addition to the FBI. Thus, you need to have a degree in criminal justice/criminal psychology and become a police officer or federal agent.

Most agency's will have their own group to do this on the local, state, and federal level. If you are really interested in doing this, my best advice is to ask your local Sheriff's department in your area.
