Their character? maybe the way they organized things? a special activity or sermon? small group studies? some things you didn't like? I feel like God is pushing me in the direction of becoming a youth pastor and i just want some basic ideas of what to do/not do. thanks

I had two when I was a teen. The first was AMAZING. He (Mark) and his wife (Kathy) were the sweetest people. They never talked down to us, they were both VERY supportive and understanding of me (I was a bad kid, lol), and they were excellent at answering questions. Also, if I didn't want to participate directly in the games, they allowed me to take score or something else.
They also had all kinds of fun games we played; some were more physical, and others required intelligence. I would only take part in the physical if it was baseball or volleyball, but I had no issue with the intellectual games. They understood that, and respected it.
I was SO sad when they left!

My second youth pastor was terrible. He was judgemental, rude, inconsiderate, and not very understanding. When I was going through a hard time with my faith, he criticized me instead of trying to answer my questions. He thought he knew everything, but he couldn't answer ANY of my questions.
When I went to go smoke before church, he'd follow me, and then berate me when I came back. He criticized my music, my friends, my clothing style, my jewelry, EVERYTHING. He allowed the other kids to do the same, and if I responded, he reported only my response to my mom.

Being a youth leader is a VERY admirable thing. But it's important to realize that not all teens are the same. They will all be in different stages in their belief. That's the mistake my second youth leader made, was trying to treat us all the same.

Why does everyone have to be so ugly!

My youth pastor was so fun. He planned great activities for us. I think the best part was that he never acted like he was perfect. He told us of his past sins, how wild he was, before God saved him. It felt like no matter what we did wrong....and you know as a teenager, everything is a tragedy!!!...he understood and helped us through!

I think it is wonderful calling to be a youth leader! Good Luck

PS, by the way, my mother is a children's minister...

The fact that

- they let us have fun,
- explained things in a way we could understand,
- let us discuss and ask questions,
- and that the sermons / presentations were funny. With kids (esp teens) you have to use humor because it gets their attention, helps them relax, and they remember it the next day! Hope it helps. :-)

His name was Buda (yes pronounced 'Buddha') and he was the neatest guy ever. He had a great sense of humor and wasn't afraid of acting like a kid either. And he was smart as a whip too. He would talk to us on our level, but never down to us. And he always had time to help.
