Adding popcorn to your ceiling does cost more money. If you were to paint your ceiling, you are only buying the paint. If you popcorn, you are buying the product (joint compound) and have to spray your ceiling! Very messy. After that, you still have to paint your celing and when you paint popcorn, it takes MORE paint because there is more surface area to cover, and the compound soaks up the paint more. Figure doubling your paint bill. Also, being someone that has popcorn ceilings....dont put them in. I hate them, wish I didnt have them, and are dated. To take them down is messy and a pain in the butt....stay clear of popcorn ceilings and be thankful you dont have them...if you are set on textured ceilings, find out what other options there are out there!

Popcorn ceilings are more expensive than painting a ceiling because the popcorn ceiling still gets painted after it has been installed.
I don't know how expensive it is to have a popcorn ceiling sprayed on, but I do know that it's not considered a popular option any longer. It's a difficult ceiling to maintain. Aside from it collecting dust and spider webs, it also has a tendency to drop piece by piece until you start seeing the drywall behind the popcorn. If you develope a leak in your roof and it gets the popcorn ceiling wet, then this becomes a real disaster because larger portions of the popcorn ceiling begin falling down and it looks terrible until you have it repaired. And, when the repairs are done to the popcorn ceiling they rarely ever look quite the same as the rest of the ceiling. This is because of all of the variables that can occur during the initial installation versus the repair (humidity, thickness and consistency of the popcorn solution, technique of installation, etc.).

Go to your favorite Home Center...Home Depot, Lowes, (Menards here) and see if they have the kits still. I saw a repair kit at Home Depot.
The finish is usually sprayed on.
It will be more expensive than painting!
Call a few drywall contractors in your area...my drywaller can do just about any texture in the ceiling!

It is not that expensive. But it is verry hard to maintain cause once it is up and you decide you want something else it has to be replaced. It can be painted over but it sucks to do and is hard to get an even coat.

I don't think it cost any more but it is not the going thing today. I suggest not to do this. It collects to much dust and spider webs. I removed mine of 23 yrs in my home. It is just not popular today.

Yes, because no one does it anymore. It's tacky and it often contained asbestos.
