Nothing happens. Game over. There are no spirits. The "we" you speak of is our individual minds, which are nothing more than electro-chemical reactions in our physical brains. When that stops running, "we" are gone.

The important part of your question is the definition of "I". I am not separate from my body. My body cannot continue without my mind and my mind cannot continue without my body. They are one and the same. (In case you're wondering, emotions are chemicals that work on the brain and therefor qualify as "body", "mind" in my definition is everything we think and the actions that we take based on what our bodies tell us).

The idea of "spirit" in the religious sense implies that there is some aspect to our persons that we are unable to verify by any conventional means (we can't hear, taste, touch, smell or feel it). And that this aspect of our persons lives on after we die. It is really just an emotional /mental construct then and cannot exist outside our physical bodies.

I do believe in spirit, but not in the religious sense. I believe that a person's spirit is contained in the work they do and the impact they have on the world while they are alive. It is the only way to gain "immortality", and some of us are immortal longer than others.

For instance, other than my genes living on in my child(ren) I will probably not be immortal for very long unless I happen to hit upon some achievement of monumental importance. Anna Nicole Smith is currently immortal, but that'll end fairly soon. On the other hand, Isaac Newton, will be immortal until the last thinking, intelligent person on the planet dies - then he'll die too.

So, where do you think earthworms, pond scum, fireflies, roses, amoebas, pigs, trees, the chicken pox virus and dogs go when they die? We go there too.

Nobody knows. I have to admit, the "Nothing happens, we die and that's it, we rot in the ground" response fails to satisfy me, and I'm what most people would describe as an "atheist." Energy can never be destroyed. I think some modified version of "reincarnation" makes the most sense. Not to say that when you die, an invisible version of you pops out and starts looking for fetuses. Just that whatever the energy was that we called "you" has to go somewhere.

Still, I'll give the thumbs up to the "Nothing happens, we die and rot, so value your life for what it is" comments. That attitude is MUCH nobler than the pathetic, irrational fairy tale with no moral espoused by most "Christians," who have shifted the entire value of life off to some projected "afterlife."

To be quite honest with you, I don't know where my 'spirit' might end up. Probably over and done, but maybe not. I'll find out when I get there, and I'm okay with not knowing, yet. Physically, matter and energy do not disappear - they are just transferred. My body will be food for worms and plants and bacteria, which will in turn feed animals or people, which will go on to feed other people or animals or bacteria, etc. I kind of like the idea that what's left of me will go into the sustainence of other beings.

This is a question that mankind has been asking since pre-history. All of those thousands and thousands of years, and still no answer. No one will know for sure. Blind faith is all anyone can go on concerning the afterlife. It does not matter if it's God in Heaven, reincarnation, or elevation to a higher existence you believe in, it's all blind faith. But look at it this way, if you die and there is nothing, you won't be disappointed. However if you believe there is nothing after you die, and there is; then you will be pleasantly surprised.

Well, in keeping up with the niceties, not to be rude or insult anyones intelligence. To understand God can be a very complex thing indeed, especially when you get into the whole "always been always will be eternity thing". As anyone that has a bit of understanding of science knows, energy just doesn't vanish it is used and transferred. Albert Einstein once said, and I quote "Science without religion is lame, and religion without science is blind". Regardless how u believe, I'll bet that each and everyone of you have had some kind of miraculous experience that just couldn't be explained, Blessings to you all, and thanks for reading.

First, have you noticed that you used the singular "atheist," instead of the plural "atheists?"

Now, as to your question, when I die, the electro-chemical activity in my brain will cease. When it does, there will be no more consciousness, or thought, or identity. All that as of who I am will be no more. That which we think of as "spirit" ceases to be.

It would be very comforting to think that we are "special" animals, and will go on forever, but I don't think that's the case. I think we are just very lucky primates.

Yargh! I just wanted to commend you for spelling atheist correctly when I saw that you fell back to the sin of misspelling in the details. Oh well ...

To answer your question, death is the end of a human being. When I die, my personality, consciousness, my enitre being ceases to exist, and my body will decay. There is no immortal spirit.

We cease to exist mentally.
Our bodies sit in the ground decaying.

That's why it's so important to value your life.

Oh, and yes, thank you for asking a respectful question without throwing a gratuitous insult into it. I take it you believe in god(s) and/or spirits - I think you're wrong, but I respect your right to those beliefs and your ability to discuss them with others without bashing us. Nicely done.

The mind is just electrical signals and chemical reactions. When we die they stop reacting, the nervous system stops receiving and it's lights out. We die, the world keeps going. Nothing left of us.
