My friend has been an insomniac for as long as I've known him. He will not sleep for days at a time and then be forced to take perscribed sleeping pills which knock him out. Then he ends up being all groggy. Can you guys suggest any remedies for insomnia? btw sorry for the lack of info.

Change of diet and exercise might help.
Otherwise, valerian root, chamomile tea, 5-HTP or tryptophan, inositol...
There are some more vitamin/mineral suggestions here:

I am an insomniac myself and I have sympathy for your friend.I started taking 5 HTP one in morning and one at bedtime. 50mg capsules. get it at Holland and Barrett. It does help and works on the serotonin levels of the brain and helps with anxiety, depression, moodswings, apetite, and insomnia. I sleep a lot better. I used to wake up barely 2 hours after I fall asleep and then that is me for the rest of the night. Now I wake at 2am and after a short while get back to sleep. I am not getting nonstop 6 hours sleep but since I started with 5 HTP ( a herbal product) I am loads better. See www.elixirhealth.co.uk and type in serotonin. or go to www.serotonin.com
Eating small meals during the day and avoiding any food or drink after 7pm also helped me to sleep better.
Lots of good wishes come your way as I do know how it feels.

First off he needs to go to bed at a regular time and if he has prescription sleeping pills he should use those when he needs to and not just after he has been awake for days. He also should have a complete physical to be sure there in no medical cause for his sleep problems. Read up on insomnia on the web to find out more about it.

When you have a sleep disorder, it's important to be consistent about going to bed, i.e have a set "ritual" every night so your body knows it's time to go to sleep and going to bed and getting up at the same time every day. I have had bad insomnia, the way you described and I don't like to take the pills. I always take a hot bath and have hot chocolate (made with milk...important!) and lay in my bed and read. I will usually fall asleep within 45 minutes or so. Your friend needs to find "his" pattern. I do recommend that he cuts down on stimuli e.g. the tv, computer, etc before going to bed as that keeps your mind awake and "busy", not as able to relax. And he should be active during the day, with exercise, etc. to help tire him out. try some thing like that and if that doesn't work, he made need to see a specialist..it does take a little time, so be patient. I saw someone recommend melantonin..it CAN work, but everyone I know that's used it have ended up with really strange, scary dreams, so I don't recommend it.

Firstly all sleeping pills make the sleep pattern worse! If taken for 3, YES THREE, nights in a row withdrawal effects can be detected on the forth night if they are not taken! The average person who is on chronic night sedation sleeps no more than 30 minutes more than they did before they started taking pills and several hours less if they don't take them.

This means is that to get anywhere the first thing he needs to do is wean of the sleeping pills. Then he needs to look at all the non-pharmacological sleep aids. There are many of these techniques, best option is to see a practitioner of relaxation therapy.

I know this works for me,get him to walk around as much as he can, go shopping, walk in the park, cleaning, hoovering the house etc.. this will make him sotired he'll be knocked out by evening time. also get him to drink some water as he could be dehydrated & it'll relax him. another good thing is when he goes to bed, do deep breathing.

..I totally sympathise..Ive been an insomniac for about 10 years...tried all the herbal rubbish..routines..."sleep hygeine"...I asked my doc for mirtazapine...its an anti depressant but is very sedative and made me sleep the whole night through...I build up a resistance to pills quickly so I stop it for a few months then go back on...maybe worth trying..
