Just wondering if you are familiar with the area, if its nice and safe to live in. What can you tell me about it? Gyms close to Ave W? I am moving there from Manhattan. I would like to get as much info as possible.

Sheepshead Bay is a safe residential area. My parents live in Brighton Beach (I lived there for years) and I visit two or three times a week. I do the bulk of my food shopping there because it's much cheaper than Manhattan.

I can only think of two gyms - Bally Total Fitness on Sheepshead Bay Road and East 17th Street (1 block from the Sheepshead Bay station on the Q or B, the B49 bus [goes down Ocean Avenue to Manhattan Beach] or the B4 [goes from Knapp Street in Sheepshead Bay to Bay Ridge] and Fitness Unlimited on Avenue X and 22nd Street.

I do most of my shopping at StopNShop on Avenue Y and 17th Street (you can read the sale brochure online every week) A few blocks away on Ocean Avenue is Waldbaum's. Both ciruculars are usually delivered - my parents get theirs on Wednesdays - every neighborhood is different.

I buy all my fish (not meat) on Avenue U - at a large Chinese supermarket near Homecrest Avenue. Avenue U between Coney Island Avenue and Ocean Avenue is a largely Asian community - great fish markets, vegetables, a ton of 99cent stores. The prices on fresh fish are wonderful - I pay less than $6 a pound for salmon fillet - always fresh and I get great shrimp for $5 lb. There are excellent Chinese, Malaysian, Japanese and Vietnamese restaurants along this strip on Avenue U - prices are even better than Manhattan's Chinatown. There's a large Rite-Aid on Ocean Avenue and Avenue U.

When you get settled, go to DiFara's Pizza - the best in New York - Avenue J and East 15th Street - Avenue J station on the Q - or B68 bus [Coney Island Avenue] or the B49 [Ocean Avenue] - take either bus or the train in one direction and go home on whichever you didn't take to get there - you get the free transfer with the MetroCard. The neighborhood near DiFara's is largely Orthodox Jewish - some of the bakeries are great. If you walk up to Avenue M, go to Amazing Savings on Avenue M and 16th Street - this is the greatest place, especially if you're setting up an apartment (kitchen gadgets, dishes, etc).

There are some good restaurants along Emmons Avenue (note: Lundy's is not one - it's the Tavern on the Green of Brooklyn - living on its reputation - really mediocre food). Randazzo's is still good. Siam Orchid has good lunches - the house soup is wonderful - so's the pad thai. The Japanese restaurant in the Lundy's building is good. A new sushi place opened on the next block; I haven't tried that. A lot of the restaurants further down (towards Knapp Street) on Emmons Avenue closed - lots of condos going up. Maria's on Emmons and Bragg is a great place to eat - every night (except Friday and Saturday) - all night - they have a fixed price dinner with a lot of choices - you can get a large salad with olives, roasted peppers, artichokes, tomato, cucumber and romaine lettuce, a large portion of delicious shrimp francese - my favorite - and a portion of ziti or escarole and Italian cheesecake and coffee for $19.35 - the year the restaurant opened. The food is excellent - I don't know how they do it - I wish I lived closer.

Sheephead Bay is a nice place to live.

Very nice and very safe to live in. Its just a little bit of a commute, and there isnt as much public transportation there as the rest of the city, but very nice, very safe, and I wish I would have rented a place there rather than prospect heights.
