The Gold Coast Airport at Coolangatta is serviced by domestic and some international small aircraft flights. There are regular daily domestic flights from Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Newcastle and connecting flights to all other Australian cities.
However, it's only 1 hour to Brisbane Airport which is far larger with many more schedules from overseas and within Australia. You may even get better deals to here:

Coolangatta OOL is the closest airport, but if you're flying in from overseas, you might be best to fly to Brisbane, and hire a car and drive there. It's only 1 to 1 1/2 hours drive.

Depending on where you are flying from you may find it cheaper to fly to Brisbane and take surface transport to Surfers. (When I was a kid I thought that Surfers Paradise was Surface Paradise - OK it didn't make much sense, even to me.)

either Myer or David Jones would be closest and easier for your dad to find because they are major department stores. They are in the heart of the city so if he asks anybody on the street they would more than likely be able to point him in the right direction. punch in your hotel address in the google maps and then on another page do the same for the mac stores and you will get a location of each and then you can compare it to your hotel map to see which is the closest.
