I'm going to Italy next week, as my exchange stay, and I don't know what should I buy as a present for that family...I'd love it to be special. Any ideas?

Bring something that is known in your hometown. I had family come to New Orleans from Holland and I gave them mardi gras beads, mardi gras masks, jambalya mix, zapps potato chips etc

The best present would of course be something really local and typical from your place- if it's available. But ensure that the stuff is not available easily through the Internet or shops outside your region.
Suggest you take a nice picture of you with your family and your home, put it in a nice frame and present it to them along with some souvenirs of your place. Books about your city or state or region with lots of pictures are also excellent since the family you'll stay with might not be as fluent in English and pictures can speak better.
T-shirts about your place are also good- one for all member of the family.

I know that they do not have stuff for somares over there so bring that as something quaint. Our foreign exchange student brought us a book about vienna where she lived so we could understand some of their culture and she brought some hand painted mugs from austria.
Try to find something that is important about your area.....like a person above had said, and bring them a book about your state so they can learn about your home as well. It's a great experience

Is there anything that your town or area of the country is famous for?
For instance, I live in Pittsburgh, so I might bring them a steelers t-shirt or some Heinz products. Something like that.
