Optical zoom would give better clarity, etc.. here's a good article on optical vs. digital zoom.

Optical.
The reason is that light waves (Particles??) are extremely small, so there is more per 'point' than data collected per pixel, especially when zooming and spreading the same light over a greater area.

Digital cameras are getting better, but they generally make a 'best guess' based on the surrounding areas thus the image is less sharp. To see this effect best go to a dealer who sells video camera, choose a ridiculous digital zoom like x700 and look at a distant object, I bet you call tell when the digital enhancer takes over!

Optical.

Digital is just like using the zoom in windows, it just makes the pixels bigger, the larger the zoom, the worse the distortion.
