They don't want to lay themselves out there and then get burned. The chance of that thought is humiliating. Trust takes years and experience.

Very good question. There are so many reasons to why. But trust me if have true feelings for someone I would say it rather then keep it to myself. I don't mind getting hurt at least I would know when is the right time for me to move on with my life if that person doesn't feel the same way about me.

Vulnerability. But really how can two people grow emotionally stronger without that crucial element. To me it is like the spiritual, kinship part of the relationship. Lying by omission, which is consistent with this inability to share true feelings leaves a void, and prevents a true trust from growing in my opinion. You really have to conscious of who you are in a relationship and you must desire growth to be truly honest about your feelings in a relationship. If this is you and there are things you are not sharing that you feel, just start doing it and see what happens.

it makes them more vulnerable; it's easier to get hurt if you let your feelings out. it's not that you don't care about the other person, you just don't want to make it that much easier for them to hurt you.

but depending on the other person, you might just want to take a chance. love doesn't exist without risk.

They are either pretending to be something they are not or they are keeping their feelings hid to try to keep from getting hurt.
