My Mom is thinking about getting a mini citrus tree to put on our balcony. I was told it would probably attract sparrows(or finches) Anyone ever done this before?

I know hanging plants attract Turtle doves but is there anything that would attract birds into nesting on my balcony?

the following birds that live near me are:

Pigeons

Turtle doves

Black birds

Sparrows

Grackles

I usually see these on a reular basis, I also read some guy on his site found a bird nest in a flower pot on a potted plant shelf outside.

I believe all the birds you listed are opportunistic. Try buying a couple of nesting boxes at your local pet store. Hang those along the eaves of your balcony. If your mum doesn't like the idea of the plain boxes hanging, then paint them up. Good luck Mate! I really must admit I admire your single-minded determination!

Birds will nest in hanging pots. The citrus tree could possibly attract a pair of doves. The best way to get the interested is to get a feeder and some kind of water feature. The more plants you have the better. I assume you live in the US. You could get hummingbirds if you have some flowering plants and put up a feeder. Good luck!

If the whole purpose was to attract birds, I used uncooked normal white rice. I'm not sure about a mini-citrus tree. There are birds that love citrus fruits. I have a tree in my front yard; I'm not sure what kind it is, but a lot of birds come to it.
