Yes I have read it many times. Very true. Man will continue to destroy himself, the whole time thinking he is an all powerful god of his universe. Sad isn't it?

A fool might disagree with that quote out of misunderstanding. Although I liked the response the fella gave about science giving us Prozac to calm our fears. God provides many inspirations in scriptures for the scientific mind. But like most gifts we are given, there are those who's selfish perversions leave the rest of us shocked and horrified at the abominations they create.

Scientists gave us the science. It was nationalist ideologues who ordered the bombs made. And scientists went along because they didn't want the Nazis to have the bomb first. It was the lesser evil. Many of the scientists on the Manhattan Project urged Truman NOT to use the bomb.
And now, which people are most keen on using nukes? religio-nationalist ideologues? It's the zealots who want to turn everything into a weapon.

Many people -- even Martin Luther King -- express the wish that somehow science can be stopped. It can't. There's just no way to stop the advancement of knowledge and its potential application. What needs to be done is for advancement of ethical and moral values to keep up with the advance. That's not impossible, but it is very, very difficult. But we have no alternative.

Knowledge is power.
I agree with that.
I don't agree that we should abandon all intellectual pursuit because it can be abused for the purpose of harm. Reason, the "champion of science", is a valid epistemological tool. Faith is not. Faith allows for dogmatic certainty in the absence of and sometimes in spite of justification and reason.

"I was sold to a sick European by a rich African battlin'
Middle Passages, I can't go back again
Battlin' years of denied history, lies and mysteries
Wives with misty eyes watchin' their husbands be beaten viciously
Battle in the wilderness of North America
Run by the river, only stoppin' to pray chased by predators
Terrorists with etiquette who vote and kill their president
Their capacity for evil so evident and prevalent
Ain't no hesitation involved, a nation dissolved
While we sit back waitin' to evolve
Those who would trade in their freedom
For their protection deserve neither
Not a name, not tradition
Religion, you learn Jesus
Turn the other cheek
Inherit the Earth, just stay meek
**** the way you speak
Try to run, we chop off your feet
Fast forward to 2004 we selling
Yo this ain't what I'm settling for
I want more, yo"

I think that it means we are worshipping the wrong god. In our quest to find meaning to life we are looking in the wrong direction and then end up with the wrong results.

Science is not a god. And if there were no science, only superstition would remain.

I have trembled before the fear of the threat of nuclear warfare and cruel people who would be happy to use them... then I found Buddhist logic.
