it depends on the person... I have that same problem of wanting to be with the person that I love, but she needs to make it clear to him that she needs to concentrate on studying. if he really loves her he will not be so demanding. I had to make some changes in my behavior, but I don't mind because I know it'll be good in the long run.

Neediness, expectations, jealousy and obligation...destroys relationships in my opinion. The relationship should be based upon what is mutually beneficial for BOTH partners. That is the only way to grow. Part of your life, actually a large part of your life is a solitary journey so you can grow, and explore your potential. This has to be a conscious decision. She should attempt to express this to him and if he really cares about her growth, happiness and evolution as a person he will find other outlets for himself personally when they cannot be together.

If your married, usually yousee them every day, but as just a dating couple NO. It is not necessary. This guy sounds like a real cling-on. You will be catering to HIS needs, and you will end up second in line all the time. He is looking for a Mother or house maid with benefits. Tell him to screw off, get a job, or some friends.

The surest way to destroy a relationship is to rob a person of her (or his) free time by wanting to spend every day with them. I know, firsthand, this is true because I used to be the "guest who would not leave."
It wasn't until I killed off one promising relationship by showing up at her place every day. and almost killed off another which eventually lasted 28 years, that i learned to give your partner some time to herself. She needs her space, and he needs a hobby-- something else to occupy his time.
You need to have a man-to-man talk with him and explain, in a nice way, what I just told you. Feel free to quote me, if you like, but he needs to get the message ASAP,

your friend obviously doesn't have time for a boyfriend right now. i myself work full time and have 2 young children (2 and 3) but i love my boyfriend enough to at least set some time aside for him. maybe it's just me, but i thought that if you loved someone, you'd WANT to spend as much time as you can with them..or maybe it's all the romance novels i read. i dunno but it sounds like your friend doesn't love her bf as much as he loves her, which isn't fair.
