why do a lot of well known artists use slide photography? is there a benifit to using this method or do they do it because it is required in some aspects of the art world in some way? and is the digital camera working to phase slides out?

My husband is a 'fine artist' and has many 'slides' of his work. When an artist wants to make a 'submission' for a 'showing' of one or more of his pieces, he doesn't want to 'mail' or 'ship' the actual pieces ... and 'slides' are small but can be 'seen' on a 'large screen' by the 'judges' ... and that is why artists use slides. The 'digital cameras' today are 'much better' than slides' in one way, because you can just 'e-mail the image' ... but the aren't BETTER because the 'colors' on different computers are not 'all exactly the same' ... and even a 'black and white piece' may look 'different' on two computers, so 'slides' are still 'the best way to get something viewed' and judged without having to send 'the real piece of art.'

Just to add a little bit to everyone's answer above, light passing through a slide will always give a brighter image than light reflecting off a paper surface. It can be very difficult to create the same effect on a print.

Because slide is so unforgiving (hardly any latitude for error in the exposure), the colors seem to come out relatively true to life; also, it is less expensive to have processed since there are no prints; and, it can be projected and because of the lighting used, the images seem sharper and colors more vibrant (like looking at a paper photo and comparing it to a back-lit LCD image, which seems to POP out at you because of the back lighting).

No other capture media beats a well exposed slide! It's too bad slide shows are a thing of the past. And a medium format slide is a thing of beauty!
Also they are faithful in color reproduction, so WYSIWYG.
