Vodka, whiskey(bourbon, Scotch...), and rum are the three most popular spirits in America. Gin and tequilla's popularity are on the rise but nowhere close to the top three.
Region is stretching it, you could debate over what they are and which/what is the region.

Can;t answer for all regions. But I live in California and from what I observe, wine and beer are well liked (great wine country both in NoCal and SoCal) and there are a lot of small breweries. Margaritas and other drinks made from tequila, perhaps because of our proximity to Mexico. And I see a resurgence in the Martini.

I bartend in Minnesota and Wisconsin here is what i find i make the most in no particular order:
Whiskey sours
Whiskey cokes
Gin & tonics
Cape cods
rum n cokes (mainly captain)
Screw drivers
Sloe screws
Jag bombs
Manhattans (not to many So-co manhattans)
Rob Roy
Martini (mainly beefeater gin)
Tequilla Sunrise

I'm sure it goes city by city. In the richer communities, probably wine, scotch, cognac. Poorer communities, beer, tequila, rum. College towns: obviously beer, malt beverages, whiskies, tequila, vodka, rum, and I'm sure shooting spirits rather than making mixed drinks is still in high fashion among the youth.
