I have a 7 month old puppy that is bleeding when he poops. We have been on albon and other antibiotics that seem to work for a few days and then it is back to pooping blood. My vet says just to try another round of antibiotics but doesn't know what is wrong. Any ideas?

He is a golden retriever if that helps.

Have a snap test for parvo done. Ask about IBS/IBD. Don't keep hitting him with antibiotics without knowing what is going on. You could actually make any bad bacteria in his gut immune to antibiotics not to mention you are killing the good bacteria. Go ahead and give him some probiotics to get his gut bacteria back and to aid digestion while he's sick.

Is this lots of blood or a little blood? Bright red or dark red? Are his stools solid, loose, or full blown diarrhea? Has he had a fecal floatation done? What is he eating (food, treats, stuff in the yard, EVERYTHING)? Any chemicals used around him (including floor cleaners, bleach, and anything else)? Did you add anything new to the house like a new carpet? If this is all too much to answer here, you can e-mail me. stary_eyed_angel@yahoo.com

I have a friend who is currently studying parasites and she may be able to help you. Her dog is finally on the mend after she and the vet FINALLY found an uncommon and very hard to kill bacteria in her dog's stool. If you'd like to contact her, e-mail me and I can put you in touch with her.

the blood could be cause by worms. take ur dog to ANTHER vet. did ur vet EVEN test his stool? if not, then u really need to get another vet, this is routine in the vets office that i work in. and im pretty sure its rutine EVERYWHERE else.

dont keep giving ur dog anitbiotcs, its not good for their body. its not even good for us if u keep taking antibiotics, ur immune system will not resopnd to them anymore. then when u or ur dog really needs them, they wont work. so yeah, i would just say, get a stool sample (or the vet can it for u) and see if there are worms.

it could be roundworm.

dont worry about Parvo. if ur dog has parvo, u would know it. if parvo is untreated ur dog will not eat, drink andbe VERY sick. if ur pup is acting fine, dont worry about parvo. ppl come into the office saying there dog has parvo, BUT if ur dog does have it and had it for like 2 days, then it would be dead by then. so really DONT worry about it being parvo @ all. :)

if the stool sample come up negative, then ask if u can get some blood drawn. maybe he has some kind of disease.

PS.
if u get the stool sample yourself, and u cant get it to the vets office before tomorrow morning, then put it in the refrigerator, i know that sounds really gross, BUT u need to keep it fresh. just make sure u put it in like a cheap tuperware and that inside a plastic baggie. KEEP IT AWAY FROM FOOD! Good Luck! and God bless♥ hope all will be well SOON!

I think I would find a new vet! Call another vet and explain the problem. Get a second opinion
