You can tan for real still. Just use a good sunblock on the tattooed area. Protected skin = protected tattoo.

With any new tattoo, you should try to avoid direct sunlight for the length of time recommended by your tattoo artist (usually two weeks or more) for healing. It's impossible, however, to keep out of the sun for the rest of your natural life, so often after the appropriate amount of time, the tattoo will be exposed to the sun again. This causes minor fading over time, depending on the colours (some inks do not take as well as others, such as white or light-coloured ink), but can easily be corrected with touch-up work. Spray tans should not bother your tattoo, provided that you have allowed the tattoo to heal completely before doing so. If you still want to tan for real, you should be able to by the time summer rolls around -- just be prepared for the possibility of having to do some up-keep on your tattoo in years to come.

Do both. Tanning of course... blah blah blah skin cancer. I don't like to tan because number 1, I got straight from ghost white to fire red... no tan inbetween.
But, I have 3 tattoos, tried real tanning, and doesn't do anything to tattoos. Only thing you have to watch out is if they are new. Still in the peeling process part. You shouldn't really do it then, same with swimming and staying in water for a long period of time.
I do the spray on tans, becaue I don't like being ghostly. I like them, and they are wayyyyy faster. 60 seconds I think they are. They can last a while too. And you can go as many times as you want to get as dark as you want.

i think it's a great idea not only for your tattoo but for your general health. i stopped going tanning years ago, probably when i was about 19 becase i started looking at all of the twentysomething people whos skin looked well into it's 30's and were fast on their way to looking like the gross wrinkly lady from "there's something about mary" (ugh)
i have been using the at home tanning lotions that do a gradual tan for a couple of years now and have been completely happy with the way i look. no, i'm not dark dark brown like i used to get but i also won't look 45 when i'm 30 and i won't get skin cancer AND my tattoos will stay fresh and beautiful. so spray tan away!!

If it's past being flaky and shiny then it should be completely healed. Spray tanning shouldn't affect your tattoo too much, might make it look a little faded but that's about it. Unless you want a splotchy looking tan don't cover it with any thing.

You can tan for real, but tattoos or not, you need to protect your skin with at least SPF 30 and minimize sun exposure when possible. Of course, you are supposed to reapply the sunblock every few hours, but I think I'm the only person OCD about that.
As long as the tattoo is healed, fake tanning or real tanning, protect it and you should be fine.

embrace your ghostly whiteness like I have :D. I try tanning but I just cant keep it up. I figure my pasty white skin is perfect for making the colors on my tattoo pop.
My artist said what those above has said, keep tat out of sun, use sunblock. Spray on tan wont hurt the tattoo...but my Question about spray tanning...wont it change the colors of the tattoo, darken them?

They make a special "tattoo stick" for people who have tattoos. They sell it at most tanning places. It looks like lip balm and you just put it on your tattoo and it help keeps the colors from fading.... I have 3 tattoos, and all of them look great. I tan 4 times a week and they havn't faded. Hope this helps!

I've done both...real tanning with sunscreen and spray tanning. I've had my tats for years and they're fine, no fading or damage. I moisturize year round.

the spray on tan looks just as good! really it does! noone knows but you! it protects the tat and your skin and cancer and all that jazz. also you'll stay looking younger than you would from the tanning beds. those things fry you so bad that your skin makes you look twice as old. good luck girl! stay healthy, sexy and strong!
