China are not famous for the beach, but for heritage, culture, and cheap shopping. Beer cost about 5 to 10 RMB. 1 US$ about 7 RMB meal really vary about 10 to 50 RMB. Have a nice holiday hope you like it.

You must go to Xi'an to see the Terra Cotta Warriors. They are amazing.
For shopping, learn to haggle. You are a tourist and are likely to be charged way more than what the item is worth if there isn't a posted price. It would be a good idea to at least learn your numbers before you come. You can do numbers 1-10 using one hand. Invest in a phrase book and use post-it page markers for the different sections for easy access.
A word of advice...avoid taking the train if you cannot get a sleeper berth. I find soft seats uncomfortable since they don't recline. Hard seats in the summer on a full train are a nightmare. Hard seating is where the standing room only ticket holders stand. It's hot, smelly, and crowded. Take a bus instead. They are generally nice coaches with reclining seats. air conditioning, and an intransit movie. Sometimes they give you snacks and a drink. Depending on the length of the trip they will stop at rest stops every so often for five minutes. Long journeys will usually include a 20 minute break at some point. Some buses have working toilets on board. The bus is only slightly more expensive than the train, but it is worth it. Many times the bus will be quicker than the train. I've lived in China for four years and I will always take a bus over a train soft or hard seat. Sleeper buses are also available for really long trips if you can't get a sleeping berth on the train. However, these may not be feasible for someone over 5' 3" tall. They do tend to run on the short side. However, it's not too uncomfortable and they run at night so you are likely to sleep most of the way.
Also, you may not always have access to a western toilet so learn to balance in a squatting position. Toilets here are generally porcelain holes in the floor. Take your own tissue and handi-wipes with you. Many bathrooms do not provide toilet paper nor do they always have a sink and soap to wash your hands. In many places you do not throw the tissue in the toilet, but rather in the trash can next to it. Sewage pipes here are not made to handle all that paper at this time.
These are just a few of the things that make daily life here such an adventure. So come on over and enjoy. China is a magnificent country.

July is not a good time to go though - will be really hot, probably over 35 celsius degrees in Beijing sometimes, and Shanghai. Beaches in Hainan are supposed to be beautiful, but that is the south tip of China, over 3 hours flight from Beijing. Most things are cheap in China except imported luxury goods, such as designer clothes (the genuine ones), but of course that won't be the point of your holiday anyway!

Nowadays in all big cities in China you can have more than you ever imagine to see & shop until you drop for any kind of goods, mostly likely cheaper than where you come from, including imported designer goods. Prices are cheap for most things, especially food & drink. Beijing, Shanghai & Guangzhou hotels of 4 star category won't be a lot cheaper than say London, San Francisco or New York, but most decidedly the 4 star ones would equal 5 star else where, & everything else is cheaper. Country side visits especially worthwhile.

China is not a holiday, but a journey! Stop thinking about it and book your flight now, go there with an open mind and open eyes, you wont regret it! Sights, culture, language, people, you got it all! Airfare is not that expensive depending on where you are flying. I'm flying in August, the high season, from Vancouver to HK, return via Beijing, for under $1,1000 with Air Canada.
I don't need to retype whatever you can find yourself on the internet, there is so much you can find in terms of advice for travel, accomodation, food, activities, etc. My advice, if you are serious about going, it to get yourself the Lonely Planet guide and plan your itinerary according to the time you have and what you want to do. Beijing is a must on any circuit, you cannot go around it, but China is big and anyone who's been there will tell you different things about what you must see and where you must go. In my opinion, almost any province is worth seeing and everything is subjective. You can travel on the very cheap in hostels and guesthouses for $10/bed and eat in cheap (but delicious) restaurants or snacks on the street ($10/day/person), or you can travel in luxury in big hotels and expensive restaurants that will set you back hundreds of dollars a day. You have an endless choice. As for travel within China, if you have the time, take the train, cheap, fast and comfortable (hard or soft sleepers for long distance).
But as far as the beach is concerned, there are some nice beaches around Dalian in Laonning province (closest to BJ), also around Xiamen in Fujian province further south, and of course around Sanya on Hainan Island at the extreme south of the country next to HK.
About shopping, it is great, you can find anything you want at a fraction of what you would pay in North America or Europe. Now you can afford to wear (knock-off but great-looking) designer underwear! You can go to the usual markets to get great deals for a lot of bargaining on everything from electronics to antiques to clothing, but frankly, you will find the best deals where Chinese people shop.
I got many web links if you have anything specific in mind.
