Ok, so my boyfriend loves sauerkraut, and in the 5 years I've been with him, I've never bothered to make it. Well I just bought some and was wondering...what do you serve it with? I know he likes it with mashed potatoes, but what kind of meat? and is there a special way to cook it?

Just heat it up. You can serve it with corned beef, brisket, a pork chop...

this is my favorite.

3 lbs Country Style Pork Ribs
3 or 4 potatoes peeled and cut in half
large can of sauerkraut
salt and pepper to taste

Heat oven to 325 - Rinse pork well under running water (this washes off any bone fragments from slicing the meat) put in the bottom of a 9x9 glass baking dish that has been sprayed with cooking spray (or use shortening, but don't forget to do this or the pan will have to soak to get it clean). Place the potatoes on top of the pork and salt and pepper (to taste). Cover completely with sauerkraut and the juice. (leave at least an inch of space from the top with the juice) Cover with foil and bake for at least 90 minutes. I have left this baking for two hours and then turned the oven off and left it in there for another hour. The only thing that happened was that the pork was literally falling apart. Spoon onto plate and enjoy with green beans or a salad. A piece of apple pie or some applesauce is a great desert.

Here's one, so easy, delicious, rib-sticking recipe:

Do you have any stores near you that make their own, authentic, Germantic or Polish or Alsacian or Baltic sausages? Buy some - a variety of 3 or 4 types. Also buy a small piece (about 75 grams - 1/5 lb) of good smokey ham. Cut sausages into pieces (at least 3cm - 1 1/4 inches - but not more than 10cm - 4 inches - long. Put into a pot with the sauerkraut and peeled small potatoes. Chop up the ham into very small peices and add with a small amount of caraway seed and a cup (250ml) of reisling (the best) or scheurbe or mueller-thurgau or gruner veltlinger wine. Stir. Bring to a boil
then reduce heat and cover. GENTLY simmer for about a half hour (until potatoes are done), stirring occasionally, while you and bf finish rest of wine as an aperitif. Put pot into centre of table and serve yourselves from it in soup dishes, accompanied with some excellent beer or ale.

Cook a small prok roast in water till almost done and then add the sauerkraut with a little brown sugar and cook for about 15 minutes. Make some mashed potatoes to go with it. The next day you can have hot dogs on a bun with the leftover sauerkraut.

Take the kraut and rinse it. Put in a crock pot with 2 diced potatoes, 1 tablespoon of brown sugar, 1/4 cup unsweetened pineapple juice, 1/4 cup chopped onions, and about 2 pounds of pork steaks or pork chops. Turn on high until hot and then turn down to low and let cook for 8-10 hours. It is great. If he likes sauerkraut he'll love it. Serve with mashed potatoes or rice and gravy, biscuits, some type of green vegetables, and applesauce. MMMMMMMMMMMMgood.

Kraut works well with any pork, corned meat or sausages. It is better to use kraut from plastic bags or jars as the canned kraut picks up the tin flavor of the can.

I use kraut with a little sauteed onion and apples.
First rinse the kraut by putting it in a strainer and running water through it. Then add it to the sauteed apples and onions.

Just heat it through and DONT over cook it.

You can put it in a caserole with good quality knockwurst or brats (the white kind). Sprinkle with a tsp of caraway seeds. Cover and bake for about 30 min. in a preheated 350 deg oven.

Add some german potato salad on the side

INGREDIENTS
4 potatoes
4 slices bacon
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons white sugar
1/3 cup water
1/4 cup white wine vinegar
1/2 cup chopped green onions
salt and pepper to taste
DIRECTIONS
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add potatoes; cook until tender but still firm, about 15 minutes. Drain, cool and chop.
Place bacon in a large, deep skillet. Cook over medium high heat until evenly brown. Drain, crumble and set aside. Reserve bacon fat.
Add the flour, sugar, water and vinegar to skillet and cook in reserved bacon fat over medium heat until dressing is thick.
Add bacon, potatoes and green onions to skillet and stir until coated. Cook until heated and season with salt and pepper. Serve warm.

sauerkraut goes well with pork, hotdogs, sausage and mashed potatoes. just put it over the pork roast and add water and bake it, or while heating it in pot with hotdogs or sausagel. if you don't like the sour taste of it i found if i drain, rinse and fry in butter it is really yummy. you don't have the sour taste because of the rinsing and the butter gives it a completely different taste. remember kraut is just shredded cabbage in different spices.

sauerkraut works with just about any pork dish. You should rinse it before cooking. gets rids of that real sour taste everyone hates. then add a little oil or drippings from your dish and simmer. season to taste

Simply warm it up and serve it with polish or italian sausage, or kalbasa, and a green vegi like green beans with bacon and onions. And some warm and serve dinner rolls

Then you want to stay clear of the "gas" for a while, remember it just means he liked it LOL
