Well its always good to keep your conversation topics diverse. You don't want to talk about the same thing over and over again, and you dont want to talk about one thing for days and days. Then again, it all depends on the type of person. If the person is one that enjoys debating issues or isn't really shy talking, then controversial issues like politics, religion, education, culture, and others would be good topics to use. However, try not to get too personal in your topics, because sometimes that can drive a persona away. If the person isn't much of a talker, i'd stick to small talk like talk on the weather, everyday issues like traffic in certain areas, sports, etc. Once you get one conversation going, you shouldnt have trouble starting a second one. Also, it's really important that you understand a little bit of what that person likes and doesnt like to talk about. From there, you can get an idea of what conversations and topics to start. For example, if the person is into videogames, you could talk about some of the newest videogames coming out. Or if that person's a sports buff, that person can tell you about his favorite team and sport, etc...
Good luck!

well, if you're not worried about the person's reaction to how you feel//how your interests might cause a conflict,
politics and religion can keep a conversation going forever. anything that debates.
or if it's like a first date or something. do the obvious, what do you do, where are you from stuff.

i am assuming this question is in regards to a date scenario. i would converse on topics that the other person enjoys. we are all superficial and self absorbed. studies i read in psy today state that people in general like hearing their name repeated numerous times in a conversation. people feel important.
