I have a toy poodle and I have no trouble giving him a bath-- except when it comes to his face. When he drinks water, the fur around his nose and mouth gets really stringy looking even after it's dried. Not a good look for him. And he's white, so he gets those tear stains down his snout and I want to wash them off. But whenever I bathe him, he licks the shampoo off his face and swallows it. How can I keep him from doing that? I once tried to hold his mouth closed while I washed, but he freaked out. I don't want him afraid of baths, nor do I want him sick from eating shampoo. What to do?

use tearless shampoo on his face, and wet it thoroughly before you use the shampoo, that way he will get his fill of water before he gets shampooed
its totally harmless if he eats a little bit of it,
and the reason its stringy when its dry is that you are letting is dry withouth air on it, brush it while it dries and it wont look like that

1)Either put a muzzle on your dog while you wash his face, its for just a few minutes so he should not freak out. 2)Or if you dont want to do that there is shampoo from the pet store that will not harm them if they swallow some and it wont hurt them if you get some in their eyes.3)Take a damp cloth to clear those tear stains
I had the same problem with my dog and found this as the solution -hope it helps.

If he is not much young then don't worry they will freak you out but wont bite you put gently over their head and move your hand slowly towards the nose and then you can just put the shampoo like you do face wash of a kid .. even if dogie lick the shampoo it wont harm him .. take good care of him

Rowdy once ate a whole bar of Dove soap. Other than puking it up and having a little runny stool for a few days, he was fine. He licks the doggie shampoo all the time, and he's fine. A little bubbles won't hurt, as long as your pup's not devouring the whole bottle, and make sure you're using doggie shampoo, not people shampoo.

Go to your local pet store and buy some pet wipes. I buy them because my dog hates her face being wet (shampooed). I will give her her regular bath, then wipe her face with the wipes. They work great for odors, stains, and muddy feet as well. Good luck!!

maybe you could use something like a baby wipe (which are safe for dogs) or the type of wipes they make for bathing dogs (baby wipes will be way cheaper though!). then you can clean his face without giving him an actual bath, and when you do bath him in the tub you won't need to lather up his face.

The little bit that he will get from licking his face won't bother him. All dogs seem to have a shampoo obsession.

first puppy shampoo will not hurt him. second I was told by a groomer to use vasoline under there eyes so the **** would run of instead of sticking to there eyes. I use the vasaline lip therapy because it is a thinner density. just place on your finger and wipe under the eye and down.
