I have a cocker spaniel and I clean her ears once a week by using a q-tip and antiseptic wash. Be sure not to go into the ear canal with the q-tip. also, you should try to keep the dog's ears from getting into the food bowl or water bowl when they eat. You can buy deep bowls for that.
If you need to you can always get an ear cleaning kit from the vet.

My vet told me to mx 2 part vinegar and 1 part water in a squeezy bottle and sueeze in hard and let him shake. Then take a cotten ball to clean out what you can. My cocker has constant ear infections, but his clears it up and help prevents. If a cockers ears get ht and red you can give them 2 adult benedryl to reduce swelling and reactions(ask your vet about all of this first).
