I need to find a good English or Irish pub to bring two Englishmen to. Some place authentic (not touristy) with a wide selection of beer and a soccer game in the background would be a big plus.

The only English pub I know is The Telephone Bar and Grill in the East Village on Second Avenue and 10th Street.

There used to be a great English pub, in the West Village called Topsy's - this place was a lot of fun - good food, lively crowd. But, it's been closed about a year (Topsy was the owner's grandfather's donkey).

I love some of the Irish pubs - for the music. I don't know anything about beer or soccer, but, these bars have good music and pleasant bartenders (who don't make faces when I order my kahlua and amaretto "girlie drinks".
Tir Na Nog near Madison Square Garden on 33rd Street - excellent food and great music

Paddy Reilly's Music Bar on Second Avenue and 29th Street - I love the music (this neighborhood has dozens of Irish pubs)

Baggot Inn - 3rd Street near Sullivan - good music - sometimes they have poetry readings

Rocky Sullivan's Lexington and 28th

Tommy Makem's on Lexington and 57th

There a hundreds of Irish Pubs -- McCormicks on 365 3rd Ave. features Soccer Rugby etc. There are a couple of English pubs -- Telephone Bar and Manchester NY 920 2nd Ave are the only ones I can think of.

PS having visited England several times I have to say there is nothing here quite like an authentic old English pub.

Oh dear, I do know there is an English Pub on 8th Avenue in the Village, right around the area where 8th Avenue turns into Bleeker Street, but I am drawing a blank on the name of the Pub. I know this is going to sound weird, but if you pick up a book by Kinky Friedman, one of his earlier mysteries you will find the name of the restaurant. Kinky really lived in the village and all his characters are real people and one of his friends owns the bar. It's not a tourist trap.
For Irish Pubs, there's one on 14th Street around 9th avenue that has live music and is very famous. Gee, I'm great with knowing where they are but not remembering names today. I hope this helps somewhat. Also suggest that you just pick up a Zagats and take a look, maybe you'll even find the places I've mentioned. But, if you get Kinky's books you will get a really funny read in the meantime.

Not sure where in NYC you are going to be, but here are two in Midtown, PJ Carney's (which also has one on the Eastside) and the Old Castle Pub. (Websites are shown) I've never been to an Irish or English pub in Ireland or England, so I cannot attest to their authenticity - but both are alot of fun and have tv's.

I would think they might be interested in a real NYC bar so I would suggest after visiting those two, you might take them to Mickey Mantle's on 59th (CPS) and/or Ben Benson's on 52nd. I added their web sites also...

Have a bloody good time!

Doesnt exist to my knowedge in the city...They are all contrived and touristy.

If you want to steer away from the tourists avoid mid-town and look towards 8th-11th streets or down in the single digits on the Avenues.

I'm English, and the last thing I would want when in N.Y. would be a phony English or Paddy bar.Surely there are some old American bars still about, full of American character?
