I am a Wiccan and as such am aware that the word Witch was not reclaimed by early Wiccans but CLAIMED by them, and that holding people as somehow wrong for using a term that meant what they said it did first would be inherantly silly.

Ha Ha! Love your twist on it! One must remember it is pure fantasy and fiction and look at it as such. I am a WITCH not Wiccan. And I would have to say that for the most part I am not offended because at least most of the shows portray witchcraft in a positive light, as being good not evil. Often portraying the witches (or wizards) actually fighting evil forces. At least on TV with Charmed, Sabrina and going back to Bewitched. The older movies were pretty good about it, many pre-Wicca. I love Bell Book and Candle (1953). A few of the newer ones do take advantage of the irrational fear that people have of us, but at least I know it is not realistic. Some, like The Craft are mildly upsetting. Only because although whoever produced it actually did a little research they exaggerated way too much. Movies do tend to take ANY subject and blow it way out of proportion. Guess movies of what we actually do most people would probably find quite boring since we are not flashy.

No, those images are a part of our history, human history. The green-faced misshapen witches hve a little history, after being beaten, starved, tortured, many witches looked like that. As for HP, I love those books, they are fairy tales, and good ones. I am not offended by these things, Harry Potter has a lot more truth than some other stories that are supposedly true. Maybe I'm just not that easily offended.

Witchcraft isn't a religion -- it's a technique which, like prayer, is used in a variety of different faiths.
And most witches can usually differentiate reality from fantasy, as well as smile at those fantasies. As a Wiccan witch, I have no problem with the media examples you've mentioned, because they have nothing to do with the real-world practice of witchcraft.
What I do have a problem with is false representations of my religion, Wicca. Fortunately, aside from certain Christians who insist that we worship Satan and sacrifice small animals, I've run into relatively few media misrepresentations... although "Charmed" still makes me wince.

As an ex-Wiccan, I used to simply be amused... artistic license is used most of the time to dramatize anything and make it more interesting. Letting my mind be disturbed by simple things was and still is a huge waste of time, what's more important is what I'm doing in conjunction with the world around me... are my actions beneficial to the environment or harmful, and therefore harmful or beneficial (by default) towards other sentient beings?

well, it's much like the outcry of the catholic church when the Da Vinci code came out. they were afraid that people might see them in a negative light. we're just not as vocal and try to take things with a grain of salt. look at the movie the wicker man (i refer to the original as i have not seen the new version) it portrays us as a blood thirsty human sacrificing cult! so yes, it doesn't help our cause, it creates alot of misconceptions about our faith. thanks for asking : )

Hollywood liberals make fun of Wiccans and Pagans. The Wiccans and Pagans are just too blind to notice it.
Wow, that is an awful lot of thumbs down. Did I let the secret out?

If there are no witches, then they cannot be offended. Claiming to be a witch does not make it so.
