Haven't bought a bike in years and need a recommendation. Thinking of something in the mountain bike family. Visually cool, 26", multi-speed of course. Hoping to spend $100-$175 or so max. Any thoughts or recommendations??

Thanks!

Not off-roading. Live in Chicago, so will pretty much be using it in and around the city. Will use it to ride to work and and over to the beach.

Depends on your intended use. If you plan to go off road and put it through it's paces, you may not be able to spend that little. That said, the brand of bicycle is usually not what you should look for; look for the brand of componentry. That is, the shifters, the brakes, wheels, etc. Look for shimano parts, and even if you're a rookie you'll do okay. The frame isn't going to break on you, but the components very likely will, so if you invest in componentry over bicycle brand name you'll be ahead of the curve.

You'll want to avoid all bikes from Walmart, K-Mart, and Target. They're all junk that won't last long. You might find something decent used in that price range. Try ebay or craigs list to see what they have. But be very careful. Alot of stolen bikes are sold on these sites. And always take it for a test ride to make sure the bike is in decent shape. New, you'll find nothing decent under $250, and that's on sale. Many shops are still trying to get rid of 2006 models.

Unfortunately, $100-$175 won't get you much these days. However, if you can jump up into the $250 or more range you'll have a serious number of good choices.

Unfortunately, quality and inexpensive are mutually exclusive. In your price range, you can try Dick's Sporting Goods or Sports Authority. They may have something in your price range. But, if you plan to do any serious riding, you'll be replacing or repairing that bike within a year.

you can get something a lot better if you just jump up to about 300. Most of those cheep bikes are what I like to call pretend bikes. Even on the road they won't last long

You don't need shocks on the road, they are just extra weight. especially if they are pretend schocks
