She's a Pomeranian and shes about 3 years old. Its really weird, cause she does it the worst in the mornings. Its like she caughs and weezes at the same time and can't get her breath. It kind of sounds like when a cat gets a hair ball. When she does it she just looks at me like help, like it really bothers her. Sometimes it's so bad that I have to rub her throat and her neck to get it to stop. It makes me worried that she might have asthma. Any ideas of what it could or might be?

I think it may be reverse sneezing, I will post some sites to see if it sounds like her..> http://www.purinaone.com/dogcare_cond_atoz_article.asp?Seed=784&ArticleNumber=30071

Otherwise, it may be environmental or food allergy, and switching to a food with less allergens may make the difference. or changing your fabric softener, or other household chemicals, or if pollen, it will pass with the season..

Likely she has kennel cough, AKA bordetella. She doesn't need to be in a kennel situation, at a dog show, or even out of her yard to get it. She'll need to see a vet for it if it is that bad as it can damage the lungs or turn to pneumonia. If it is KC, she'll probably receive a penecillin shot at the vet's office and be sent home with antibiotics.

She could have pneumonia and that is something that would need to be treated ASAP.

She may actually have asthma as well and again, you'd need to see the vet. Dogs with asthma can lead perfectly normal lives so don't consider it a death sentence. I had a beagle that lived a full life with asthma. I found that massaging her back and just speaking calmly helped her. If I got upset, the asthma became worse so I learned to stay calm (that took a while). There are medications to help but my family opted not to use them for Lacy since her attacks were not frequent. We figured that the occassional attack that I could calm was better than the side effects of the meds. However, if your dog is having frequent asthma attacks, I'd go with the meds IF you are comfortable with the possibility of the side effects. She's your dog so you decide what is best for you and your dog.

There are a couple of other things it could be (cancer, heart murmur, etc...) but I'd have the vet check for the most common causes first before panicking. Just make an appointment and see what is going on with her. Let us know how she is!

A heart condition can also cause a cough like that. She is young though, so I doubt she has heart problems already.

My parents had a small dog that had an enlarged heart when she got older (apparently that's common in small breeds). It pushed on her wind pipe and she wheezed like what you were describing. It sounded horrible, and they eventually had to put her down because her heart and lungs got so weak.

We have a 40 lb dog that occasionally coughs like that - he also has a heart condition, just a slight murmur.

I don't want to scare you, just let you know that it can be serious and you really need to take her to the vet. Hopefully it is something easier to treat, like kennel cough or a cold. Just get her to a vet and let a professional tell you what is wrong!

could be a respiration an infection or kennel cough if he has been around different canines. Do take him to the vet whether that's undesirable. Mine sometines have allergies besides which in specific circumstances appears like that.

It could be kennel cough or the dog flu that has been going around. I would take her to the vet just in case. 1 in 10 dogs die from dog flu if not treated and it has been going around my area so I am sure it is elsewhere as well.

it sounds a little like colapsed trachea,
that happens when the trachea flattens and it is irritated by heavy excersize and pressure on the neck,

while this is not often serious, there have been does killed by a collapsing trachea

, i think you need to see the vet and take action to help her like using a harness instead of a collar, not letting her get out of breath with excerswize and letting her warm up before any strenous activity

good luck

Sounds like a reverse sneeze caused by allergies. It sounds alarming but nothing to be distressed about. if she continues to have problems i'd talk to my vet about getting her on some benedryl.

It sounds like "Reverse Sneezing! My chihuahuas do that too, when they get excited. When it happens, very lightly massage their throat, and it should stop.
