Contrary to what others are saying, getting water in the ears can be a major problem, especially if your dog has drop (floppy) ears. Water sitting in the ear canal can cause ear infections -- a dog's ear canal is not shaped like a human's. And ear infections are smelly, uncomfortable for the dog, and can be expensive to treat. So I can see your concern.
As another mentioned, you can use cotton balls. I use a soaked/soaped washcloth on the head because then I can control the amount of water around the ears/eyes. When I rinse the dog's head, I do it with a low volume of water (again, for control), and I use my free hand to "close" my dogs' ears -- with a drop-eared dog, you can use the ear itself to cover the ear canal. With a prick-eared dog, I "close" the ear by pressing the base together and shielding the opening a little with the ear itself.
Easier to show than explain in print, but hopefully that makes some sense.

You can cover his ears and eyes with a wash cloth so the water and soap dose not get in his eyes and/or ears. If the water gets in his Ears take a medicine dropper and put 1 drop of vinegar and alcohol mixed together and put it in the ear then masage ear area gently so all the water is dryed up and your dog will be okay.

water in his ears wont hurt him. you want to put the soap on top of his head and under his chin, but especially behind the ears, thats where doggies get the dirtiest. dont use human shampoo, use a dish soap, because they contain degreasers and will get your dog the cleanest. try DAWN liquid soap it's the most gentle for their skin, and doesnt have all the perfumes that other brand have. use the soap as a concentrate, dont put it directly on his skin, 1 part soap to 5 parts water, and it will work up a good lather. when your rinsing, cup your hand over his eyes and run the shower attachment or drop the cup of water towards his back, and again a little water in the ears wont harm him.

When I bath my dogs I do not run water around their face/ears. After doing their bodies I simply wash their face and ears with the wash cloths, then rinse the cloth and go over their face again and wash inside their ears as well.

Just shampoo it but be careful for his eyes and ears. I got water into my dog's ear once and the poor thing was leaning his head and his ear for quite some time afterwards, but it was OK after a while.

you could bathe him interior the tub(or the kitchen sink).... make beneficial he's combed out first as mats tighten while they get moist. Use luke heat water, dogs shampoo, and dogs conditioner(in case you %). certainly, bathing the dogs is a marvelous time to bathe his ears(use a cotton ball w/ a small quantity of rubbing alcohol) and wipe the interior of his ears(do no longer poke the place you could no longer see).

Hi...never pour water over a dogs head. What I do is put small pieces of cottons balls in her ears and then wash her head with a face cloth.

I don't honestly know whether or not your supposed to wash their head or not.I wash my doxie's head with a damp soapy wash cloth. But I'm responding to another response. You re not supposed to use anything other than dog shampoo because ANY human shampoo is too harsh for any animals skin. I'd recommend using a shampoo that deodorizes. I hope this is of some help to you.

Don't use kids tearless shampoo! Please, human products could have a negative affect on your pup. Anyway use a damp wash cloth and put some cotton balls in the ears, this will absorb any water that seeps into the ears.

Using a cup pour the water over his head, but shield his eyes with your other hand. You can get a little water in his ears, that is ok.
