I own 3 jack Russell's and they are a strong dog breed for hunting. That's why alot of jack russells are found in the dog pound (which by the way i got one from the pound) The main way is to get a fence becauses if they see a squirrel or cat their instinct is to chase. They are a fearless dog trying to take on ANY dog no matter how big so confinement is a serious issue

This may sound mean, but my dad did this with my mixed breed terrier when I was a kid. For about 2 weeks, he would take my dog to the property line , hit him on the snout and say "No!" After that, he never left the yard. He lived 15 years without going outside the property lines, would chase rabbits right to the edge and had a wonderful life.

I am certainly not an advocate of negative reinforcement and would never train my dog that way. But, it worked. The dog that I have now was trained completely with positive reinforcement, and I would never trust her off leash in my yard. So, I keep her on the leash and only let her run off leash at the dog park. I take her for daily walks on a leash around the neighborhood.

A fence. If you tie them up or use an invisible fence, other animals can get in the yard. With small dogs like that, you run the risk of a larger dog/animal coming in the yard and possibly hurting them. Plus the invisible fence doesn't always work, and with a chain they will probably just get themselves tangled on something (or each other's chains) and be miserable.

I agree with the first poster...

fence with an invisible fence buried right under it. He'll learn not to dig under because of the shock /invisible fence, but he won't be able to just run across the invisible line like he would without the actual fence. If that makes any sense.

A fence? Terriers can be great diggers, so make sure your fence is inescapable. If you keep them outside for long period of time, make sure they have proper shelter, and water available to them.
