Thanks for the advice so far, iam going to leave the question up a bit longer.

Yeah that would be my problem of doing it while i lay in bed. Often, like one responder said, i do it to focus myself so i can sleep.

If your eyes are closed, try keeping them open but gaze floating somewhere beyond the tip of your nose and downward, if your gaze is already downward (like I do in Buddhist meditation) then bring your gaze upward but not focused on any one thing... this works for me. If I'm too tired, like today, then I just chalk it up to being too darn tired, in a non-judgemental sort of way. The idea is to not get frustrated with yourself in ANY meditation.

Hmm. Just occurs to me that it is easy enough to develop calmness while sitting in a quiet room staring at the wall.

But perhaps the tricky thing is to stay calm while late for work and stuck in traffic?

Why not try meditating while doing other things? Just do one thing at a time. By which I mean that while eating an orange, just eat an orange. Taste it. Smell it. Really see it. Don't think about the shopping, outstanding jobs, Y!A or the sound of birdsong!

If you drift, just refocus. Following the breath may help. Then back to the task in hand.

Just an idea. Good luck.

If you are that tired, you need the sleep more than the meditation. When I meditate, I am focusing. Stop trying to "clear your mind" and focus on your desire or goal. And NEVER meditate on your bed, you're just asking for a nap.

Make sure you're well rested. If you try to meditate and fall asleep, that just means you were tired and needed sleep. Keep practicing, sit up and don't lie down, and don't worry about the "right and wrong" way. You'll do fine.

Actually I often meditate so I *can* fall asleep...

For active meditations, I prefer a long walk. It puts the brain in a very creative state.

I don't think you are meditating correctly. It should be awe-inspiring, not lullaby.

Try contemplating, the stepping stone to meditating. Think of something contradictory, or dual, or just plain interesting, ask yourself why it is that why, or why it isn't. Stuff like that.

Don't worry and don't try to stop it. It happens, it is the process of your mind to withdraw from meditation. Don't force it, it will disappear in time.

Meditation requires intense focus. I don't see how you could fall asleep if you're doing it right.
