i cant believe these people would rather knock out there kids with chemicals than spend time with them

bring lots of activities and tons of crayons

most travel agencies, airports, and AAA sell activity kits for long trips in differnt age catagories ( they are kinda expensive so check them out then make your own if you so choose)

dont make her just sit there get up and move around every so often but stay with her (even if it's just to the bathroom)

bring her favorite stuffed animal and blanky on the plane with you

if there is an empty seat next to you let her sit and or sleep there during the no seat belt part of the flight

if you have a travel dvd player bring her favorite movie

you should be able to bring a small bag for your daughter as a carry on (walmart has wonderfull travel bags for kids that fit the size requirement)
bring snacks and drinks (non perishable of course)
less sugar the better as you dont want her to get to hyper

make sure to get her first flight wings as they will be a distraction for at least a little while then a keepsake

start playing airplane games and preparing her now so it's not so scary or a complete shock

if she's good on the flight (i dont mean perfect as she's only 1) buy her a treat or toy afterward

Ok well I am going to have to totally disagree with both the previous answers!!!
1. Giving your child medicine to make them sleep? No way! Do not do that. Any doc/child heath care worker will advise against this.
2. An airline will NOT give you a half price seat for a one year old. As you probably know under 2's fly free (just pay the airline infant charge usually) but have no allocated seat. If you are doing a long flight book them a seat (you will have to pay FULL fare though) if you don't fancy them wriggling/sleeping on your lap the whole way!
One point to note is even if you book them their own seat they will HAVE to sit on your lap for takeoff and landing (it's a legal requirment for all infants)
Take plenty of toys, possibly new and intresting ones, not dolls or teddies, but stuff like crayons and paper, sticky tape as someone else mentioned, or one of those high chair toys with the rubber suckers on the bottoms works well as you can stick it at a 90degree angle onto the tray on the back of the seat in front!!! Keeps em entertained.

I traveled with my 1 1/2 year old son from california to Frankfurt germany. Your child needs their own seat. portable DVD players are great and snacks and any toys that are quiet and keep her busy is what you need. try using her favorite toys and a few new ones for her to make the trip special. Definately walk around with your child so t hat they aren't straped in the entire trip. Don't take your child into the bathroom with you if you don'thave to. my son kept pressing the attendant button and they thought that I was locked in the bathroom when all I was ding was using it. I almost got walked in on.

Scotch tape or masking tape. Inexpensive, disposable, goes thru the x-ray scanner just fine. I took my son to Alaska from NC. Of all the toys I had packed, that lasted for hours.

perhaps it's time to introduce the sippy cup. Why is it out of the question? She has to benefit quicker or later. i would not panic approximately it. The ear rigidity isn't that undesirable. Will she take a pacifier?

Definitely a little medicine to hel her sleep, ask your pediatrician, but I assure you it wont hurt f you don't exceed the dosing guidelines. Also you might want to get her a seat, you should be able to get one half-price if you explain to the airline she's just one year old.

children's tylenol or benedryl, it won't hurt them if you give them the correct dose. it'll knock them out. take a favorite blanky or bear or doll or truck, you get the idea. always, have snacks, goldfish, animal cookies, and a sippy cup! spoil them on the plane it will keep them happy
