Definitely, retirement is a big milestone in someone's life! When my father in law retired we got him a digital camera (he did not previously have one) and software programs to use to edit his photos. He loves it and it always taking photos of everything and he spend hours editing them! The point of a retirement gift is to introduce new hobbies, ideas, or activities to that person to fill their time with. So a tool or anything of the sorts would work if he has a lot of "repairs" around the house that need completing :- ) Gardening or fishing are also popular activities for retired persons.

He definately needs a gift.
If you know of something he loves to do often and you know he will be doing more see if you can get something that will aid in his hobby.
Talk with his family, friends see what he has mentioned as something he would love to do when he retires, make a collection from all and give him a priceless gift from the family along with a party.
I think he would love that.
Then there is always the cleche gag gift.

Yes, you should definitely get him a gift.
When my father retired, I got a picture from my Mom of when he was young and had just started. It was taken of him at work. I also got a picture of him taken at his desk about a month before retirement.
I had both of those put on his cake for his retirement dinner, plus had them framed nicely in a double frame. He loved it. It was a "then and now" sort of thing.

I think giving him a retirement gift is very appropriate, retirement is an important milestone. If he has a hobby...I'd probably go for something related to that. He is going to have more time on his hands......does he like to fish or golf?

Yes! Get him the Dangerous Book for Boys because now he has so much free time he might as well go and build a go-kart or learn how to play marbles or something.
(I just got that book for my boyfriend and have been flicking through it!)

I would look into a custom wall plaque saying something like:
To a Great Dad, wonderful Grandfather
and... and...
Happy Retirement!

find out what he likes and get him something related.
The only retirement present I ever saw was a wooden box with rare spanish coins. Not my bag personally but it is something that lasts whereas bottle of whiskey etc is gone when its gone.

Throw him a party -- buy a card and a book on travel, or spare time activities like fishing, boating, camping....
