I have a friend who's husband (they are separated) filled their taxes jointly with a CPA who is a friend of his. He is only giving her $150 saying thats half of the refund they are getting but she feels like it should be more and because he handled the taxes she has no way of knowing. He will not tell her who prepared their taxes. I looked at www.irs.com and it says it takes 60 days to recievce a copy of their return. Is there any way around that and she can get a copy sooner?

By law, the CPA has to provide a copy of the tax return to her, no matter if its a friend or not. Since the tax return has her name on it, she is in titled to get a copy of it. If you do not get a copy of the tax return, please go to the Accountants Board and file a complaint with them.

She won't be able to get a copy of the return itself from the IRS until May or June of 2008. She can apply to the IRS for an extract of the information in the tax return. Those should be ready sometime in May or June of this year.

All of that said, the CPA who prepared the return is bound by law to provide a copy of the tax return to the taxpayer upon request. Since the return has her name on it, he cannot refuse to provide her a copy -- friend of her husband or not. If he does, she should contact her state's Board of Accountancy and file a formal complaint.

She can get IRS issued tax transcripts in 1-2 days form Accuverify.com, she will be able to see the amount of the refund, and all she needs to get it is her signature on the 4506-t. See the sample tax transcript on the web site.
