Do not make a big deal out of it. My cousin was a thumb sucker and everyone tried to get him stop and it just made it worst. He would hide so he could suck his thumb. Whenever he saw someone coming he would start sucking his really fast because he knew that someone was going to pull it out.

The child will eventually grow out it.

we finally got our 4 year old to stop sucking her thumb back in october.

we started by only allowing her to have her blanket and suck her thumb when she went to bed. after she was use to that we told her it was time to stop sucking her thumb. We explained that it is bad for her teeth and encouraged her constantly (do not try to humiliate your child or call them a baby).

we told her she could get a kitten (obviously you can use a toy or trip to chucky cheese instead) if she would stop sucking her thumb completely.

the first 3 nights were the hardest. i had to sit in her bed with her and hold her until she fell asleep because she was upset and because i knew it would be harder for her to resist if she was left alone. After about a week she no longer needed her thumb.

however, i noticed that when she was sleeping and on the verge of waking up (like in the mornings) she would stick her thumb in her mouth. luckily she is a noisy thumb sucker so i would hear her and gently take her thumb from her mouth and hold her hand for a minute or just wake her up for the day.

good luck!

I was a thumb sucker when I was little. There is a nail biting "polish" that you can paint on his/her thumb, it taste awful. It is clear so no one will know and the moment they stick their thumb in their mouth I am sure it will be the last.

I researched online for a while and found some information on this website:

I googled "stop thumb sucking".

Kids do this for security...replace it with something else. A doll, security blanket, etc. If all else fails, put some "no bite" fingernail polish (it's clear and tastes terrible) on their thumb.
