My boyfriend has a 745il and it's horrible in the winter, it fishtails badly and the brakes! forget it. But what about the 3 or 5 series how do they drive in the winter? Do they slide? Do you get stuck alot? Please advise. I was also considering the Lexus IS 250?

BMWs are rear will drive vehicles, which make them handle poorly on the snow and ice with the factory tires. The 745 also has very wide tires on it which make it even worse. If he were to put a set of Bridgestone Blitzak snow tires on it during the winter it would drive perfectly acceptably for him on the ice and snow. Then put the regular tires on in the good weather months. I have a 540 Sport and that's what I do.

His car is rear wheel drive with a V8 and summer tires. The summer tires probably being the biggest contributor to the poor handling in winter weather.

BMW's are perfectly fine in the snow overall. It certainly snows in Germany. You can get several models with All wheel drive and most come with some form or traction control now. BMW's also have a nearly 50/50 weight balance, so rear wheel drive would not be any worse than front wheel drive as there is no more weight over the front tires than there is on the rear.

He needs all season tires and to probably start off in 2nd gear. It would also not be a bad idea to put a few hundred pounds in the trunk and to slow down.

might mean that its a rear wheel drive car.
Mines a rwd also and can make your heart miss a beat in winter or in the wet but doesnt happen very often and once used to the car your more ready for it.
A few weeks ago sat at lights against a mpv he was reving so when lights changed thought i will show him but placed to much power to the rear end and sat there spinning and snaking .looked great to watch but another example of rwd.
So all safe to drive just remember to take a little more carewhen turning and dont put your foot down to hard where it can slip.
unless your drifting in the d1 team that is .
End of the day you get used to it and dont really notice it.

any car, including bmw, which uses a rwd layout, will slide a little in the snow, especially with performance tires.

the rwd cars without performance tires aren't too bad, but bmw also offers awd in the 3 and 5 series. awd (all wheel drive) is excellent in the snow.

your boyfriend probably isn't a very good driver. A car only operates as well as the person driving it regardless of road or weather conditions.
