Tricky one in that by the first definition we are, but we are specifically excluded in the second definition.
So I would say that in general I view humans as not being animals unless specifically considering only purely biological aspects.
A better term to use when wanting to include humans with animals is creature.
1. any member of the kingdom Animalia, ... stuff on eating and sensing and moving, etc...
2. any such living thing other than a human being.

Could a mouse be confused with an elephant? We are mammals yes, but I can never be convinced that they are one and the same. Humans are vastly different that other animals for they use much more than the lemphatic (am I spelling that correctly, I don't know) brain.

No, they could just be ignorant. Also, there are ways in which it is true to say human beings are not animals. Human beings have legal rights.

Maybe... That or they clutch tightly on to faith and hope because they have had it put into their head at a very young age, and they can't change their mind. =)
I have no problem with Christians- or any other religious groups, as long as they don't tell me I'm going to burn in hell, or try to convert me. =/
