All questions have value. If it was not for 'what if', we would not have the theory of relativity. "What if I was to ride on a beam of light?" If it was not for 'what if', we would not know how benzene bonds. "What if that dream I had actually had a grain of truth to it?"

'What if' is the fundamental of ALL knowledge.

Without 'what if', you have nothing.

OK, you can regress. OK, stop regressing now.

What if, is a standard introduction to a hypothetical question. It only means that the asker is making a proposition, not a statement to be taken seriously. It is a way of opening the question up.
"What if God is real. what would you...?" instead of "God is real. What would you...?"

If that is the case then they should just shut down the R&S section and forget about it. Since all religion is by its very nature hypothetical then religion may as well be abolished also.

I say go for it.

I agree with JP. "What if" is the basis for all real knowledge.

I also think many people want to know the answers to the hypothetical "what if" questions here. Thinking about them can help redefine our beliefs.

A large % seem to be inexperienced in their religion of choice and fishing for answers. Frankly I find most religious communities to be clueless. Another large % are athiests, agnostics, and spiritual people who dislike fundamentalist christianity (and completely disregard judism, islam)

"If" questions or hypotheticals are usefule for values and judgement clarification. But they can easily be turned into something ridiculous which is why many people dislike them.

Anything I perceive as "annoying" is just a projection of my own confused mind... thereby informing me that I've got a long way to go in cultivating a calmer mind...

I have a long way to go in cultivating a calmer mind...

Aren't religion and spirituality big old hypothetical questions? The ultimate what-if game?
