Some of the child's favorite foods. Kids aren't usually into surf and turf or anything too expensive. If you do a small variety of inexpensive foods you can make something special about the meal itself. Go to a park and picnic. Have a backyard tent party. Set a fancy table with candles and a vase of flowers especially for a girl. Get construction paper and let every one decorate their own take home place mat, just takes a little glitter glue scissors markers and anything you want to add. Put little containers of bubbles at all the seats for an after dinner blow-out. Give the birthday kid their own disposable camera to take birthday memory pictures.

Order a platter of deli meat, cheese, and a salad from your local deli as well as buns to "make your own sandwich". They'll include condiments (ketchup, mustard, mayo, etc.) at no additonal charge. You could make up a relish tray cheaper than what they charge. For beverages, have some sugar-free Kool-aid or lemonade and of course, cake and ice cream.
