Paul says it is better if you never marry. It's in one of his epistles, but I can't remember off-hand which one.
Edit: 1 Corinthians 7:8: "To the unmarried and the widows I say that it is well for them to remain unmarried as I am. " (NRSV)

1 Corinthians 7 is a great resource for answering this question, if taken in it's correct context. At the time Paul was writing the book of Corinthians there was a lot of persecution and he stated that it was better to be single so that the believer could focus on their walk with the Lord, however it is very clear that if a man "can not contain" his sexual drive then it would be "better to marry that to burn."
I think that it was always God's design for a man and a woman to be together (as each has something about them that completes the other) (Genesis 1) and that if both are serious about their walk with the Lord then they could help each other grow closer to Him (and thus grow closer to each other).
The only time I think it may be selfish to marry is if you're marrying to use your spouse to get something (like sex, for instance). The decision to get married should be based on a sincere love for your mate combined with a desire to meet all of their physical and spritual needs (1 Cor. 7). If both spouses have this desire and focus then what an AWESOME marriage and life they will share together!!!

I think God treats us individually. For some of us, marriage is in the plan, but for some, being single is what God wants.
God does want us to "be fruitful and multiply" and in order to do that you need to be married (umm, to do it right I mean lol). I would say that includes the majority of us.
But for some, it's like Paul says, if a man has a wife then he's concerned with her, but if single then he can concentrate on God. For some people, God needs your complete attention so He can do mighty things through you.

It might've been considered "selfish" 5,000 years ago for members of a tribe of savage nomads wandering in the desert - you know, the people for whom most of the "bible" was written. Nowadays, there are over 6 billion people in the world. Procreation (which is always held up as the justification for marriage) is no longer a necessity, but a liability! It's actually much more "selfish" now to arrogate to oneself the privilege of crapping out kids left and right.

According to Paul, being single can mean you can accomplish a lot in doing what God requires. It's not selfish at all. It's a personal choice.

In the bible in the Book of Corinthians Chapter 7 it says it's ok to be single as long as you don't have sex with a unmarried partner, if you can't it's best to get a wife then . If you are a believer you can serve the lord more if you are single.

In the Quran, God says to marry so that both can satisfy each other (sexually). Marriage and GOOD treatment of your wife is also half of the religion. Too bad so many men are failing in most of the religion, heh? But yeah, I feelat times I would like to remain single, but then I get over it.

Paul says a man should remain in his own calling.
If it is within you to be a Dr. then go to medical school.
If it is within you to teach, at any level, then become a teacher.
If it is within you to rescue people then become a fireman.
If it is within you to marry then marry.
If it is within you to be single then do not marry however
if you cannot control yourself then it is better to marry than to BURN.
