The "tree of knowledge of good and evil" and the "tree of life" were two different trees. The fruit of the tree of life would have made them immortal, i.e., like gods. That's why they were kicked out of Paradise.

The punishment for disobeying God was:
For Adam, a lifetime of working to support himself
For Eve, painful childbirth
For the serpent, the loss of limbs (now he had to slither), he had to "eat the dust of the ground" and man would always be his enemy. The serpent was NOT the devil in disguise.

The "fruit" is symbolic...it's ok to eat whatever you want.

Acts 11: 5" I was in the city of Joppa praying; and in a trance I saw a vision, an object coming down like a great sheet lowered by four corners from the sky; and it came right down to me,

6and when I had fixed my gaze on it and was observing it I saw the four-footed animals of the earth and the wild beasts and the crawling creatures and the birds of the air.

7 "I also heard a voice saying to me, 'Get up, Peter; kill and eat.'

8"But I said, 'By no means, Lord, for nothing unholy or unclean has ever entered my mouth.'

9"But a voice from heaven answered a second time, 'What God has cleansed, no longer consider unholy.'

You are free to eat whatever you desire the lord has made all things clean by the atonement he provided through Jesus Christ. The two trees int he mnidst of the Garden represented the two natures of God the tree of knowledge of good and evil represents God's righteousness and the law and the tree of life represents God's mercy and a new life provided through Jesus Christ our lord.

All food is clean. You can not sin by eating a particular fruit or vegetable.
