Oh I remember it too well. Normally I was not a rebel, but well behaved when I was at school, but one day I did receive the cane for answering back a prefect on the bus on the way home from school. The headmistress, (a real old witch) told me that I shouldn't have answered a prefect back even though I was out of school, and that because I was in school uniform at the time of the incident I was to get the cane.
When she decided to do the dastardly deed she went to her cupboard and brought out 3 canes, I was told to choose which one I would like( all differing thicknesses). I chose the thickest thinking it wouldn't hurt so much. She then said because I chose that one she would use the thinest. She whipped me three times across the palms of my hands. I had such big wealds.
Because of this my dad took me out of school, I had done my exams, so I had nothing to lose. As dad and I went that day from her office she told me I would never do any good. Well that was where she was was wrong, and she had to eat her words.
At the end of term she had a presentation of all the results, and certificates etc. I passed all the exams I had taken with flying colours.
I shall never forget that spinster headmistress, she was just pure sadism. No girl could ever get out of her offfice without the cane.
I am glad the days of the cane has gone. Even though there are some truly naughty kids out there they don't deserve the cane. All the teachers nowadays should do is to make an example of them by getting them on the stage in the hall in front of the whole school, and shame them. Let their peers deal with them by ridicule.

Yes i remember it.
The chalkboard duster was a favourite with one teacher, all desk top lids use to rise when we knew it was heading in our direction.
A golf club handle was a favourite of another teacher which didn´t half hurt when your knuckles got wrapped.
The mass punisment was the best though. Why the weedy guy got stuck on the end i will never know.
We would all be told to stand in a line and bend over whilst the teacher took a plimsole to our R´ses. By the third whack the weed at the end was already crying. I have a sneeky suspicion that the teacher gave him an extra hard one for being a cry baby.

I never got the cane myself, but I vividly remember Claude Nunzio getting it when he threw a desk at Mr De Rosa. This was about 1983 in Australia.

At our school, we had the "board of education." that was a 2-foot long wooden paddle with holes drilled in it which hung in the principal's office. I received that a couple times and after that, you don't misbehave any more...
Back then (1960's in California of all places) you'ld get paddled at school, then when you got home, your parents would paddle you again and call to thank the principal. How times have changed...

I remember that and not with any sense of nostalgia either. Punishments were given by those teachers who could not control a class and I am sure that it gave some sadistic satisfaction to some teachers. The pain and humiliation were just dreadful and the fact that people still remember it is a testimony to its cruelty.

Oh yes! And then when you got home you got another earful from your parents.
The blackboard eraser was the worst - painful & messy!!
Had the rule across the palm of my hands a couple of times too!!

Yess... and getting another telling off from your parents for getting a telling off!!! Those were the days. If only these things still happened, then maybe the young of today would have a little more respect for society!!

I remember the belt from my math teacher and he told me it would stand me in good stead for my future. I now live in Turkey and the parents love their children more than life. If a teacher was to do this to their children they would die for retribution. This is a Muslim country and you tell me who is in the wrong.
Is it the father or mother who wants to protect their children or the child who would die to get retribution for the harm they were served during education.

And having to stand in the hallway for hours on end...or how about when your whole class was bad, so instead of having recess you had to sit with your head down on your desk for 30 minutes?
